They failed me again. They said I still need my engine ID'd by a licensed smog shop. Now they also said that I'm supposed to have two O2 sensors according to their diagram and need a stock throttle body boot. I don't know what to do about getting the engine ID'd unless someone can help me out here.

As for the two O2 sensors, I printed out the realoem.com diagram and showed it to them at the beginning. They still went based off of their diagram even though the inspector figured that was odd to have two of them.

best option then at this point may be truly to be honest and go with the appropriate OBD II system on the engine, along with a stock exhaust, at least long enough to get it through the BAR testing. either that, or find a crooked shop that will sign off on it....

So wait, these guys are supposed to be emissions experts but they don't even know how many o2 sensors an OBD1 engine has?

                ^^My thought as well.

However if they are looking at a diagram, do you have the S52 valve cover, maybe that is pointing them to look at the S52 info, where you would have 2 O2 sensors. (right?)

And seriously, you need a stock intake boot!? My gosh...

Well, technically they are right...it is an s52 after all.

I have a smog guy who could be convinced to 'verify' that it is a S50 from a 95 M3. Then also run a pre-test so you have verified test numbers to show them the car runs clean, and in the end that is what really matters. You will also know if it is going to pass or not.

Also I know for a fact several folks have been to the Westminster location for BAR certification with engine swaps. So I am sure they are getting keen to whats supposed to be there and whats not.

I would also do a couple other things. I would fake the coolant hoses by installing them on the throttle body and then tucking them so far up under the manifold they won't be able to trace them.

Then I would take used O2 sensor, go to a exhuast shop and have them weld in a bung after the cat, then again, take the wiring and mold it right into the harness so it looks like its hooked into the system.

There is your visual. and if your pre-test is good then I think you can pull it off.

                    Good Luck

True but he's not telling them that. BAR'ing an OBD2 swap is a bit more work.

That's what I'm saying. I read up on the forum (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...5&postcount=11) that they have the wrong exhaust diagram that shows two O2 sensors.

I do have the S52 valve cover on and they didn't ask about it. As for the intake boot, they said it had to be CARB legal. I have the Bimmerworld 3"-3.5" boot on it currently.

I have a cone filter. They didn't say anything about that, just the intake boot.

looks like all the stations are different. how many people said that cone filter was a no no but nobody ever mentioned the intake boot. i don't really know BTW what that has to do with the emissions. I kept the obd2 oil separator and now i think that maybe i should pull it out for the test... and figure out a way to get paperwork for an s50... :hitler:

dude that sucks, especially about the motor paper work. I am getting ready to BAR mine as OBDII but I still have a check engine light due to a mistake in my wiring adaptor I still need to fix. My local ref is at El Camino College in Torrance but I have heard through mckman (he took a class with the ref) that they are strict on the intake and I am using a cone filter setup.

Other than that I am pretty much stock OBDII. I will be helping another buddy with his build and he is going OBDII as well.

This whole mess is enough to make me want to move and the more i learn about the OBDII stuff like the usless smog air pump the more i get annoyed.

Just pay the man for a "friendly" smog and move on if you dont' want to take the time and money to go OBDII, especially if you dont' already have all the parts u need cause it ain't cheap to do it piece by piece, I know.
