Dude get a m50 valve cover and just drive it, if a cop pops your hood you think he can tell the difference between a m20 and a s50/s52? i've had 2 cops pull my friend over with me in it. (a 1989 s52 obd 1 318is) and they made us pop the hood and they come back saying they didn't notice anything fishy. They went to the rear of the car and saw the 318is logo and asked us why it says 318is when its a 6 cylinder. we just told them because its a 325is we tagged with 318is so people would think we are slower. And the cops dont know shit.

Ehhh, IDK if I agree with that. You'd be surprised, some cops are true enthusiast, and some are simply taught (and acquire knowledge) on what to look for. My old zinno had two previous owners-both police officers lol. I kept in touch, told him about my BAR'd S50 Alpine after the Zinno was wrecked-and he was relieved it was BAR'd. Police are trained to look for aftermarket parts and swaps believe it or not, and if you catch the wrong officer on the wrong day, you could have a serious headache.

It looks like you're flagged on identifying your motor, seems like a smog shop willing to turn their back is your only option. You might be able to find a small locally owned one in SoCal, but smog shops don't fuck around in NorCal anymore. Getting their smog license revoked and a $10,000 fine isn't worth the risk for most shop owners...especially if they're forging information that's going straight to a CA Ref lol.

If it's flagged though, this means nothing but trouble for the shop.

lol, did you continue reading my post after that? Yeah, it would definitely be a huge liability. Forged documents going to a government agency, sounds legit.

sounds like a heep of trouble here. how much more of a pain in the ass/expensive is it to go straight to obdII when doing the S52 swap?

                    honestly its cheaper.

keeping obd2 will have all the sensors installed already; no need to buy all new sensors for obd1.

have ews deleted from the ECU or just install the parts ($0 if you buy the entire donor e36M3 with your S52)

install charcoal canister for evap ($0 from your donor car)
install running losses valve and fuel pressure setup ($0 from donor car)

                    DONE.
                    OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Dude, I have been dealing with Goldenwest College for the last 2 months now.
I've done the engine ID process through a buddy's shop. I've conformed to all their specs and have finally passed visual (I have to change back to obd1 exhaust manifold, change various hoses for small, insignificant cracks, replace CATs, o2 sensor, and various other parts and I have yet to pass. The good news is that my issues lie with strictly emissions.

Question for you: what DME are you running? Stock s50 m3 DME?

Have you passed a OBD 2 swap off by the BAR? I agree that a OBD 2 is a better DME/system (ie. misfire detection, 2 pre 02 sensors, etc. )

But you also would need to have the E36 DMTL/ tank leakage module as well. Not sure how easy that would be to retrofit to a e30.

                          Just asking questions. thanks

Do you plan on keeping the car a while? Is the primary reason you are getting it bar'd is for smog/registration? If so here is a option...

Go to the DMV website and look at the counties which only required smog checks upon vehicle title transfer. Either find a relative/ friend who lives in that county OR go to a UPS store and get a mailbox in that county. Then change your vehicle registration address to the new one. If you do not have a smog check required NOW, upon your next registration if the smog check is due it will not be required because your vehicle is now registered in a non bi-annual smog county.
