    S50 fixed and dyno'd!

First off, thanks to the guys on the board that helped me troubleshoot the engine. I had spent thousands on parts trying to fix my rough idle and general sluggish performance.

After about 2 years of fighting it, between myself and local experts, I was about to give up. I had been working with Technica Motorsport in Atlanta on the tune during that time. They offered to have a look at the car if I could get it down there. Not two days after looking at it, they discovered that my valvetrain was fubar'd! Either the head was built by someone who didn't know any better, or just felt like ripping someone off.

A big thanks to Technica Motorsport. I'm excited to get it back this week and on the track in the Spring!

Anyway, on to the good stuff...

    S50 3.0L
    11:1 CP pistons
    Schrick 264/256 Cams
    Supertech +1mm stainless valves
Supertech Dual V.S. & Ti retainers
    24 lb injectors
    3.5 MAF
    93 Octane

I wouldn't say stout S50 just a good combination of parts. That's a very realistic numbers considering the compression and the cams and bigger valves.

Now you had the head off twice? and never noticed the any valve issues? Or the head was never off? Hard to keep track these days.

OEM Vanos or rebuilt one? Very glad to see you are finally happy with it. Here comes the slippery slope.

Thanks! More than I will ever admit to.

Thanks! I found an identical build on the forums from 2008, except his head was shaved to bring the compression to 11.5. His peak power was 241. So I'm pretty happy with this.

Thanks man. That's the first time I've had the head off. I bought the head mostly built 8 years ago with all of the goodies in it except the cams. When it was fresh it looked all good, but under careful inspection, some of the valves were different lengths, the retainers didn't match the springs, and one spring was slightly longer. WTF, right?

I asked the engine builder in St. Louis to disassemble and inspect it before final assembly, but they got lazy and didn't. I'd estimate Bavarian Enterprises has cost me around $5000 over the years fixing their screw ups on my 540 and E30.

Nice! Was this dyno done in a 1:1 ratio gear?

Why would that matter? except for a theoretical very small, insignificant increase in friction losses from being in a gear other than 1:1.

Because it is a difference and I'm betting he did do the run in a 1:1 gear. I've noticed in the BMW community less people do it that way and thought he should get that credit even if its not a huge difference.

Pretty much! I'll have a week or two with it, then it's on jack stands and under cover until March.

I took a quick acceleration video the other day when I was trying to sort out the minor squeeks & rattles...

I'm running a 3.73 LSD. With the G260 it's not fun on the interstate (3k RPM @ approx 65-70mph). But it's a blast around town, and probably for the track...we'll see this Spring.
