I just got my swap up and running. I have two things that I have noticed with the e34 cable (the one that craiggroves recommended in his swap diy).

#1 my throttle is pretty twitchy and sticks at the top of pedal travel. As Dave said earlier it might be a vac leak, which could help explain my crappy idle also, so I will have to check that before pointing fingers here.

#2 lots of extra slack. between the firewall and the grommet location on the TB, I have a lot of extra cable kinda looped up around the intake boot.

Is the e36 cable any better?

edit: also if i put this cable on the cruise pulley it holds the throttle open about half way, so it only works on the bottom pulley. IDK how you guys can put it on either.

      kinda on topic question.

if you are using the m50 manifold with the m52 is there any reason not to use the m50 TB?

Bumping this thread to try to find an answer to my previous post. Part of the twitch is surely from my leaky brake booster. But the cable is too long and I get a bit of a bind when the pedal is all the way out.

Are you sure you received the right cable? I'm starting my swap this week (s52 all the way) and have the recommended e34 cable. It looks short, I can't imagine having enough to loop it? I'll chime back in once I get to that point.

Yup I had the same problems using the e34 cable with OBD2 throttle body. The larger "normal" pulley on the bottom of the TB was too big. Also there is so much excessive length which irritates me. I had previously ditched the extra cruise control pulley on the bottom because extra useless things that don't have purpose also irritate me.

This is what I did. There is another little notch a little closer on the pulley, but it doesn't have any "locking" mechanism. So I put holes and bent a little wire through it. Works fine, but I'd still like to get the correct cable at some point. Also, it feels nice and smooth and normal. As some mentioned before, if you use the smaller cruise control pulley it will be a little more "sensitive" since the effective "lever arm" is shorter (due to the smaller diameter), the throttle butterfly will open more per unit of throttle cable travel. In other words, it'll open faster.

Yeah, so I am dealing with this right now. Ordered the e36 cable to make that one work. It does fit on the cruise control track but that track is way smaller and doesn't seem to have the same throw as the normal track. The second notch idea seems solid too, but I'm just getting the S52 cable and going from there.

Yea, that was just temporary. I have the e36 cable on my bench now, and just laying it up, it looks like a much better fit still with a bit of slack left. Where did the "e34 cable is the one you want" stuff come from?

I think that is all from the M50/S50 odbI throttle body. I am guessing (don't have one) that cable works well with the earlier throttle body but not so much with the S52 throttle body. Clearly there is a big difference in the cable length from grommet to end between the two.

Pretty sure all e36 cables are the same part number, I'd have to check RealOEM but the part number I bought is: 35411163228.

Yea the difference is the grommet to end length like you mentioned. But then I would think an e36 obd1 cable would still be a better length...

Yup, same cable I just ordered. Though I think there would be a difference between obd1 and obd2 e36 due to the different throttle bodies.

EDIT: just confirmed via realoem. The P/N for the 95' M3 is 35411161698 which I would assume is the correct length for the OBD1 style TB, and I would bet it would be a better fit than the e34 cable as well. I mean it's simply a matter of thinking about the distance between firewall and TB on the e36 versus the e30 with the 24v swap. The TB is actually closer to the firewall on the 24v swap than it is in an e36, so logic follows that the e36 cables should fit perfectly fine.

Yeah, hopefully this weekend I'll get mine fired up and can report back. The main Swap thread should be updated with some of the information from these later swaps, like the e36 cable etc., since that is where I think most everyone starts with this swap. At least I know I did.

For the record, the e36 cable works pretty much perfect.

I got the e36 cable. super smooth now. Plenty of length to put it on the correct pulley. It is actually a little too long. I will need to shorten it a bit, had to adjust it all the way out to get the slack out, and there is still a little slack in it. Not to mention that (wiht the pedal stop where it is) i am not getting full throttle.
