hey guys im going to the junkyard tomorrow to look for an m50 vanos, just looking for more advice or tips on what to look for as in telling if the motor is crap or not, also was curious because i have a 5 speed 95 325is ecu, will this ecu work with a different year?

The DME you have will work with any OBDI m50vanos, think 1993-1995. It will not work with a NV out of a 1992ish e36.
In regards to tips, I wouldn't be buying an engine I didn't hear/see run. -
Yes, make sure the car was hit. Don't grab the engine out of a clean shell. Also, how about trying to find one out of an e34 automatic?
