I can verify via the Android Torque app that my ecu is receiving the speed signal. From another thread (http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=264748) we determined the following:
48 pulses for e30 and 9 for the e36 equals a ratio of 5.33333. If you enter this into the Torque app speed multiplier you will get your actual speed. The e36 ecu doesn't care what signal it's getting, as long as it gets one, as others above have stated.
Hope this helps clear things up.

Drove about 30 miles so far with this wiring and no check engine light :) First time in over a year.

The wire in the x6031 did NOT work for me. I got a speed sensor code on one DME, and no speed signal using either of my 2 DMEs. Hooking my cluster signal to x20 pin9 gives a speed signal(though it is inaccurate by a factor of 5 or whatever).
I wish this info was more readily available at the time.
Now, how do we make a circuit to feed the DME an accurate signal?

Thanks for bumping this you just reminded me I was sent a Seattle circuit thing to test
