    timing chain tensioner

so i have a oil leak coming from the timing chain tensioner of my S50. the leak is on the side of my block where the ac is.

i have been doing some research and found i have the old style and they have an updated one now. i then found some how to's about replacing it and torquing it to 28ft lbs but no one really said whether it can be done without touching anything else. is it as simple as just taking the old one out and putting the new one in?

i did see that you have to make sure you get the groove lined up on the guide to the slot on the tensioner but thats about it. it would be nice if it was a 20 min job.

i also have a litle bit of noise (just a slight tick) that is only there when the engine is cold started, and after a couple of mins the noise goes away. the engine has schrick 265/256's in it if that were to somehow make a difference. Im hoping that i may get lucky and since i need to update the tensioner anyway, this may take care of that noise. i have heard that the s14s had a big problem with the tensioner and the e36 was a nice upgrade

and while im at it, i want to switch to redline oil. it has mobil 1 in it now, but i have heard bad stuff lately about them. What would be a good weight to put in the S50? Im in Maryland, and the summer days can get to 90+, but i dont track the car.. just hard street driving every now and then...or always

    any help is appreciated.

The late timing chain tensioner is an upgraded Hydraulic tensioner compared to the mechanic spring that early engines came with. Hydraulic one will last longer but isnt cheap

People use them on S14 also

I just swapped mine for the hydraulic one. Really simple. Just unscrew and tq the new one on. Getting the notch right isn't hard either.

Perfect. thanks wishno87. Any insight oil weight. i really haven't heard much good about Mobil 1. Last i heard they were having huge problems with the new GM LS motors losing lifters because of an additive mobil 1 uses.
P.S. is this the correct part. 11311405081

Make sure the new one comes with a washer or you order a new washer, otherwise she might leak.
