Who wants to play "Is This S50 Toast?"...

    Long story short- deer.swerve.tree.fawked

Cut off the front end today thinking maybe the tree just took out my intake, I knew the oil pan was cracked, etc but I'm not sure about the rest of the motor. I haven't tried starting it since the accident, it was pissing coolant and oil all over the tow truck's bed.

I took a sawzall to the entire front end and this is what I found. Any input or inquaries for more photos/information to help would be greatly appreciated. As you guessed I'm sure, insurance is bending me over so I was hoping to recoup some money out of the motor/tranny.

    Accident:

    Cut:

The oil filter housing and alernator were lose and dangling by their lines.

Dang man, sorry to see this happen to you. Luckily you're still around to build another one if so desired.

    Good luck on the motor.

Such a bummer. +1 on the chain slack. Doesn't look good. Hope to see you cruising around in an e30 soon bud!

The oil pump almost look likes its a little tweaked... I can't tell for sure from the angle of the pic though.

That sucks hard man :( Must've been quite the hit, are you alright?

            Early models do it better.

Yea we're definitely lucky to be alive. That's real. Obviously that's what matters most, money comes and money goes, a $10k loss wasn't what I was expecting that evening though.

Also wondering whether to waste my time pulling it or leave it be. I'm thinking e30 trailer for the rear on the bright side...

Jesus man, that sucks. I remember I was in Petaluma a few weeks back after visiting a friend in Fairfield and stopped by Bodega Bay to catch some rays. Dang, at least you're alright though. I hope some of your losses get recuperated by the motor.

That engine is toast, the block is missing parts of casting but as long as the timing chain is still connected, the head and all the internals could still be fine as long as it was turned off right after the crash and didn't run without oil.

I think youre lucky that the tree seemed to have came into the side of the motor and not strait on. The cleareances in an engine are so tight though i think it would be hard to say for sure unless you took it apart and measured. I hope the engine shut down immediately after the crash.

i have an m50 motor that is blown(HG blew and overheat, head is toast) that you could use to frankenstein a motor using your s50 head, assuming its cool.

Looks like the oil pan jammed up against the oil pump chain, causing it to skip a tooth, hopefully that extra 1 link worth of slack is just putting tension on the timing chain tensioners...

Not sure, the oil filter housing looks like it left a bit of a mess on its way out.

It shut down immediately after the accident. Even two hours later when the tow truck arrived, I still saw oil coming out of the pan. I never tried starting it afterwards. I got my insurance offer back today at $3,100! That's based off of comparable vehicles selling in my area LOL. I told him that's not acceptable and nothing is stock about this vehicle, I'm $16k into the fawker.
