Just an update. After sitting for a week and trying it again, the idle no longer has an issue. I tested it again yesterday, perfect idle. Aside from cleaning the ICV, the only thing i did was jiggle the TPS plug to make sure it was secure.

I've done an incredible amount of reading on the subject and have not found a definite solution. The most logical thought was that it had something to do with the VSS. It's not isolated to E30's though; the E36 guys on Bimmerforums have the problem as well. The problem is it's intermittent. I only have it happen to me maybe every 5th-10th time I drive the car.

Very strange. There is no doubt that multiple issues can cause this. Mine for example was not intermittent. Always did it....until it didn't.

As far as VSS goes, I tested two DME's, and since i have a digital dash, I had to hard-wire a VSS signal with a pull up resistor from the diff, so I know it works. Anyway, VSS most likely didn't cause it on my car.

Good luck with yours, it kinda looks like that's what it takes for most people.
