    Bar Certified California S50

    Hey guys.

My smog is coming up in December and I've decided that I don't want to pay it off anymore.
I started to get my car ready for the BAR certification but still have some questions.
First of all I can't find any solid threads on the procedure at the station so if anyone has good information let me know.
Second, I have bought the two cats but now I'm debating whether I want to run the two resonators. Seems excessive and it would save me money.
Technically as long as its under 95db it should pass but I have no experience with how loud it would be. I would run two cats and a muffler.
    Anyone have suggestions?

    Thanks

This was my experience. I'm sure everyone has their own !
ref'd at Skyline in San Bruno
I think there is a ref station at DeAnza still ?

    Car passed first time !
    1989 E30 325I /1994 M50tu CARB tag August ‘12

call BAR set appointment. they will ask what why where when
    see link below
    Proof of Purchase:
You should be prepared with some sort of a bill of sale with description and the engine ser # , source(vendor) . If buying from a private party ie Craigs list write out a bill of sale with all info. Sellers name, address, CDL what you are buying, what it came out of, where thy got it, why you have it etc. have them sign date, phn # . Also get any current paper work like most current smog test results with donor vehicle ser #
    Inspection:
First thing tech will do is enter your data into the computer. This will tell them what is required for emissions and engine layout and location of data plate. The engine Id on the side of the block above the pan rail should be clean and readable. I think /can’t remember but I believe this may also verify the displacement ie 2.5L etc. ?
    Smog Equip:
Used all stk E30. carbon can in stk location, purge valve hooked up to TB and plugged in to harness, PCV valve in cam cover > intake mani.
    Engine Management:
413 red label . Tech had me pull the DME so he could verify donor vehicle using ser # on DME. He ran the number in his computer and ya the DME was from a ’95 something with 220+k miles at its last smog chk done in Sacramento area! too much info. Told me 413 is not stk with 94 but he would accept the 413 since it is still part of same eng management family OBD1.

UPDATE 9/13: there have been a couple of posts in last few months about refs being pretty aggressive on proof that DME you are using is specific to your engine. Use what came with S50

    Check Engine light:
Must work. They started turned on/off car about 4 different times. Make sure they are looking at the correct check light. Not chk panel light in center of cluster.
    Air Intake:
I reworked the stk E30 box and filter. Takes some doing/adapting . I’ve read that anything forward of the elbow on the TB is open. you can use cone filter etc. I’ve read where some people have been hassled /not passed if they changed the stock elbow to aftermarket silicone red/blue etc.
From another source “As of 01/10/10 any intake air box can be replaced with any intake...carb legal or not, as long as the stock MAF/AFM is in place. You DO NOT need a "carb legal intake anymore". If they smog guy says something..tell him he needs to check his computer cause he's wrong.”

    Throttle Body Coolant hoses:
Mine were hooked up. Read some people had not passed if not installed

    Headers:
Stk M50tu has CI headers. I passed with later S50 tubular style. No comment from inspector, but ya never know. This seems be be a grey area. I wouldn’t show up with aftermarket tube headers and expect to pass.

    Exhaust/Cats:
Layout must match stk system. ’94 E36 means: 2 cats single in/out and 1 O2 sensor if front of cats. I had new system from headers to muffler in stk position. 2.5” pipe . Replacement cats I used are Walker mfr for E36. Be sure to have part # facing down so can be verified by tech under car.
A Db test was not done.

Smog test: a full test will be done according to which region you are registering your car
    Misc:
Put a folder together with all of your data. Include parts sheets for any replacement parts and/or web sites. Make it easy for the tech to find in his reference books or they can look up on line’.
Clean up the engine bay wiring harness etc.

good info above. Im going to be in the same boat sometime next year, so anymore info would be helpful.

Im mostly concerned about them checking the block. Im trying to BAR an OBD1 powered M52 as a 93 325. DME matches my claim, but block wont.
