    Is this head stuffed?

FML....have I been screwed, again? Two heads lost at the engine shop, so I go buy a recently reco'd head from Melbourne. Get it back home and notice this.
According to the guy, the head has been fixed to sort out the crack prone area. It appears something has been going on here cause these areas are different in appearance to the rest of the chamber finish. Has it been welded and not done right? The cracks don't extend to the water gallery holes like all the pics I have seen on the web of cracked M5x heads.

3 'cracks' found, cyls 3 and 4. 6 pictures in total cause I used different light.

Those decently are cracks. Go get your money back or call the guy and tell him to pay for a pressure test.

      Pete; that head is scrap.

No reputable Bay Area machine shop will fix cracks in the head.

I was denied repair to 3 heads because of cracking/warping; went from machine shop directly to scrap metal drop off.

Why wouldn't they repair a cracked head? I know a place in the bay area that does great repair. They also stand behind the work.

          What shops turned you away?

Bmw heads are not designed by Bmw
            To be cracked and repaired

How many BMW DOHC cylinder heads have you had built? There's a built head in my street car; in the race car; and a spare built head that travels to events in the trailer as well with full new gasket set attached in box.

I've had 5 dohc heads built over the years by a couple local well known machine shops. $500/a pop; not going to risk a cracked area Re-cracking at this kind of expense; a new bmw hg set is not cheap to be throwing away on reinstalling heads not is TIME.

All the machine shops id pay for work refuse to repair cracks in bmw heads. Why bother when a crack free head is common?

What shady machine shop do you go to that wants to collect more money for weld repairs to a head that is not/should not be repaired?

Bmw heads are not designed by bmw to be overheated to point of cracking and welded again........

The alloy blocks go another step further; the block looses strength if overheated and head stud threads pull out of block; pretty common in abused cars

can't you get a good core head for like $200?

I don't know why you'd want to "fix" a head like that, even if you could. maybe if it was really minor but in those pictures it looks pretty stuffed.

I gotta agree with Haoming, with good cores going cheap and plentiful, plus having good machine shops around that don't gouge the living sh*t out of you like here in Au$, it makes no sense to get heads repaired. Cost wise, here in Aus it is not worth it either. The head would have to be something super special or rare to warrant the labour costs.

I'm trying to line up some more options closer to home. But if the freight was going to run into hundreds of dollars, I'd get a reco head from the USA.
