    Opinions on charcoal canister?

Not sure if I want to keep it or get rid of it. If I get rid of it how exactly should I go about bypassing it?

I need to pass emissions, so maybe it should stay? Do I need an EGR valve if I keep it?

Car starts and runs, just got to start working out the kinks, thanks for the advice everyone

it won't make your car faster to remove it, so if you want to pass emissions I'd leave it there.

I did emissions with it, pulled it out afterwards.

Do you have an EGR valve now????/

no, I do not have an EGR valve, just a bunch of fuel lines. It also relives fuel pressure from the tank and I think that is an important thing to do. So, if I keep it, can I rig it up to work without the valve or should I just buy one and use it?

Maybe ask the m50 guys what they've done - I'm curious to find out how necessary this is.

My euro eta had a merc charcoal canister - hilarious.

The #3 pipe comes into the charcoal canister from the tank as a vent pipe, but it looks like the #4 outlet pipe just breathes into the atmosphere.

This diagram is from a 11/95 build date '95 M3. That is what my motor is from, so I'll try to hook it up the same way. Right now I have the vent pipe coming into the canister, and then the oulet pipe just going straight down into nothing. I'll have to look at my friends '95 m3 tomorrow and see what his does. My '89 M3 has some sort of valve that is connected to the oulet pipe, I think it's the EGR, it has wires going to it also. I'm fairly certain my 90 M3 doesn't have a valve because I just can't remember ever seeing one, and I've had that car apart a few times for various reasons. I'll have to look at it tomorrow. Those both have S14's still.

325Projectz: Do you remember how exactly you had it plumbed when you went for emissions? I don't mind leaving mine in after emissions, I think the pressure relief from the gas tank is worth having.

Bimmerfanatik: I assume anyone with an M50 in an E36 car has left it in place since there is really no good reason to bother getting rid of it. It definitely doesn't really weigh anything.

It'd also help to look into swap cars - e30m50's and the like. Since they're going through the trouble of replacing the m20, see if they keep the charcoal canister or not.

I thought that is what this thread is trying to accomplish...

Well, you're not very clear on what car you're asking this question about - you've got three listed, and your posts don't really mention which you want to ask this about. Secondly, you never said anything about this question pertaining to e30m50 swaps - until now, of course.

If you want help, you've got to be more clear, especially when you're the proud owner of a few BMW's :) Take my word for it - it can get confusing!

sorry, I thought it was clear this is for a swapped car since this is the M50/S50 swap forum.

It is for my '91 318 with S50 motor. I was simply referring to the other two E30's as reference for where the plumbing goes in order to hook up the charcoal canister right in the S50 car.

aaaand I make a complete ass of myself. Totally didn't even notice you had this in the m/s50 swap section - just saw it on the main page. I'm sorry for that - sometimes I forget to read what forum I'm in before running my mouth ;)

That said, it's a big help to see the details you just posted, so we get an idea of what you're working with.

What I'm trying to figure out is Widerm3 or whatever - he clearly does not have a charcoal canister (or anything else for that matter!) That's my kind of engine bay. Hopefully he'll hop in and help us on this.

yeah I don't know where all his shit went. Must have had some help from houdini, seems like all the swaps that Rui does end up looking like that. They either eliminate a lot of things or hide a lot of stuff up behind those headlight covers or something. I dont' know

no sweat about the forum thing, it happens, now lets hear some more input on the canister!

                            dave -

the more i thought about the evap canister....the more i thought you should install the evap valve. your a detailed kinda guy......do it right or its going to bug you. get a evvap valve off ebay and route it like this.

you have two options. either way, it means nothing for emissions.....(unless they pull the engine codes off the ecu)

                            1. plug the vent line (off the gas tank) with a bolt and a clamp. plut the t-body vac line. leave the evap valve wiring hanging. it will build up some pressure in the tank, when you pull your gas cap, it will hissss alot. your ecu will forever have an evap code because it cannot find the valve.

                            2. run the plumbing like the e36 engine should be.

                            cheers, jason.

The line that goes from the gas tank to the charcoal canister is open (where the CC is suppose to be mounted), the line that is suppose to go from the charcoal canister to the throttle body is not there, I just plugged up the throttle body opening.

I scanned my car with a GT1 at the dealer, you car mostly will not pull codes because of the purge valve, your motor is not mapped off of that.
