Doing another quick and dirty 24v swap

SO, after having to replace my m40 after a broken timing belt and half assing my way through an m50tu swap, I cracked my pan, couldn't pull over and now I'm throwing an m52 I have access to in to get my car back on the road. I don't have the time or money to send my OBDII DME out right now to have it flashed and re do the harness, so until I have more resources I'm gonna hook it up OBD1.

I'm just going to unplug the harness from the M50 and then swap out engines, and plug the m50 harness into the m52 with the OBD1 sensors, etc. then save the OBDII harness and sensors for later.

I'm on a limited budget for both time and money, but I want to do a bit of work to the motor before it goes in. I have a new water pump, metal thermostat housing and thermostat for it already.

The things I'm planning to change so far are:

Valve cover gasket and o rings
    Exhaust manifold gaskets
    Rear main seal
    Intake manifold gaskets
    Spark plugs
    Oil pan gasket

Oh there was a question in there: What else would you guys suggest that isn't listed? I'm not taking the head off, doing the rings or anything like that. I will weld or wire the oil pump nut while the pan is off, though.

There's a bunch of other things you can replace while it's all apart, it's a good idea to tackle as much as possible imo.

      Rebuild vanos.
      Vanos oil line metal o-rings.
      Pilot bearing.
      Oil filter housing gasket.
      Pickup tube gasket.
      Dipstick gaskets.
      Sensor o-rings.
      Rebuild injectors.
New exhaust studs and nuts if pulling manifolds.
Intake manifold and throttle body gasket.
      Oil pan sensor gasket.
Front main seal and tensioners/guides if you have the means to remove the crank bolt.

A lot of the above can be purchased together in a bottom end rebuild kit.

Haven't experienced this myself but I've heard welding the OPN can result in the shaft failing and breaking apart.
I personally went with a pump upgrade and rebuild from achilles motorsport, but if you don't want to spend the dough for that I would drill the OPN nut and safety wire to the gear. Or buy one pre-drilled from bimmerworld or rallyroad.

You can go way deeper than that but that should cover most things that are easily serviced while the motor is apart.

Yeah I think I will do the oil filter housing gasket and probably the pilot bearing but I need this shit done asap and I'm poor.

Most items on the list are cheap!
The studs are a bit but you can skip those and just get new nuts.
Should do the vanos rebuild if you can, it's only like $50 if you get the parts from beisan systems. Will need new seals if you have more than 50k.

I have a drilled opn you can have for the price of shipping if you want.

We can drill and lockwire/cotterpin the nut, or just loctite the fucker.

I recommend a long session with a wire wheel, and some sort of treatment/paint for the block, 'cause she ugly.

You know what the rest of the car looks like. Do you really think that matters? :giggle:

But I do want to paint it some kind of colour. I'm thinking a nice shade of GAYYYYY will do.
