S52 z3m oil filter housing question?

So I go to clean my oil filter housing on a s52 I picked up and notice there isn't a oil thermostat? I then asked the person I bought it from if the car came with the external oil cooler and he said it didn't. From my understanding the external oil cooler would have the thermostat built in.

Which brings me to the question will this housing work or do I need to get a standard e36 m3 housing with an oil thermostat?

Hmm, if that is really from a z3m it should have an oil temp sensor built into it, see part 13 in the diagram below:

If that doesn't show up, look here - Real OEM Diagram
Part 13 on that diagram is the oil temp sensor and comes standard on all s52 z3m, I can verify as my engine has it.

It looks like you might have a regular s52 oil filter housing without the oil temp sensor which would be from a normal s52 M3.

      Hope this helps you out.

It has the oil temp sensor but I removed it because I don't have an oil temp gauge in my e30 yet.

The motor came out of a 1998 z3m and he installed a s54 in it's place.

I'm confused on what you are asking then. If you need the oil temp then put the sensor back in. If not, put it back in and don't hook it up. What is your issue with the housing?

The housing was already off the motor and there was no oil thermostat there. So I don't have one to put back in. Every other housing i've seen has a thermostat so I wasn't sure if it was ok to run without it. My question is does it matter if I have the thermostat or not?

Depends on when you'll drive it. If your above 60 degrees outside I wouldn't really worry about it. Anything under I would look into finding a cheap in line thermostat.

S52 Z3M did not have oil coolers, none of the US spec S50/S52s had oil coolers (except the 120 E36 M3 LTWs). If you want to run an oil cooler then get the proper housing off an S54 or euro S50.

I no that none of the us cars had oil coolers and I don't plan to run one either. I'm just trying to find out why my housing has no thermostat an all the other U.S. z3m and e36 m3's housings I've seen have them.

Basically just want to know if it's gonna be an issue? I got the motor with the housing already off the block and I didn't think it was possible for the thermostat to fall out. I believe there pressed in but I wouldn't know because I never had one to check.

Do you have a pic of these housings with thermostats, can you tell me what a thermostat would do if there is not even a oil cooler

Only the filter housings with cooler line hookups have a thermostat. Your thermostat didn't fall out, it was never there.

                      [Your thermostat] was never there.
                      This.

                      No cooler = no T.stat.

No reason to prevent cooling if there's nothing cooling it.
