    You vs a shop swap

I'm just curious how quickly a shop usually gets an s50/52 m50/52 swap done vs how long it takes you to do your own.

I know tho can get very in depth of how far you want to take it but I'm think simple ways.

Assuming the motor/trans is running with no issues and no reason to rebuild the motor, how long do you guys take doing out of your home garage usually? (Not trying to go for a fastest time and also not looking for a work I it once a month time either).

I just would assume that someone that has not done but somewhat knows their way around a motor should be able to tackle this project I 2-3 months no more right?

But when I use to work for a shop we could knock one out in a week to 3 weeks just depending on availability of parts (motor not included)

What do you guys thing? Or are use to?

If you have all the parts and a complete reseal, I would take about 2-3 days. One to strip down and reseal, second day to pull the current engine and install the fresh engine. And a 3rd to take my time and clean the bay and get picky on fitment of wires etc. I took about 3 months to do my M30 due to waiting on powder coated bits and making my own engine mounts. I had my mounts done in a few hours, and once the parts came in I had the engine in the next day.

A swap can be fast if you know what you're doing. Most kids on here are in college and learning as they go. I feel that is why some builds take a LONG ass time. Also affording to reseal the engine and do it right would add time. That is why there is SO MANY junk yard m50s floating around. Just total shit, time bombs.

no one makes bolt on exhaust system for the swap yet so custom exhaust system will burn one day minimum.

Mine has taken me quite a while but I'm also an hour away and am learning as I go. If I were to start over just knowing what I've learned already it would probably be running and driving by now. If you have good access to your car and some know how you could do this swap in a week easily, many have been done in less. I haven't even really used anything but my basic Craftsman socket set, a few open end wrenches, and some basic air tools.

Took me a week plus the exhaust shop time my first time. Second time a weekend was all I needed. It's really an easy swap.

Then again the more in depth you go the longer it will take.

First time it took me around a month or two but i was in school working etc.., second time I would of had it done in a weekend if I did switch two connectors and spent the next day troubleshooting why it wouldn't start. All in all easy swap and if you have tore enough e30's apart you can knock it out fairly quick.

first swap was like never ending because i was learning, reading and applying it.

it took me 2 days to go from SETA to 24v on my second swap, but i had all the bits for it all, including exhaust.

If this is your first swap, double the time you think it is going to take. Little things will be needed, and orders online will need to be placed.

If everything goes perfectly, for a beginner, I can see a week to get it running.

If you are experienced, a day or two is doable.

I was able to complete a swap, from running car to running car in 8 hours. This was due to the fact that the car was already 24 valved, merely upgrading the engine.

The reason I'm asking you guys is because I am having a shop doing this swap for me to save time I have had my hands in a couple of these and a few other swaps never purely alone but I am coming up on 2 months 3 weeks and the shop is still not done

It's aggravating because if I would have not been lazy and let them do it I would have been done by now for sure.

My way of venting is questioning how long it's taking.

My first swap took me a weekend, and I needed the car to drive to work Monday.
-By Friday night had the M20 pulled.
-Saturday by Noon the transmission was swapped and the M50 was in the bay. I had it started by 2pm without the radiator or driveshaft. I had all systems installed by Sat. night and started fabbing the exhaust.
-Exhaust was done by Sunday Afternoon. First drive around 2pm. Needed to remove driveshaft to adjust something. Lost an hour.
Drove it to work Monday morning and spent a few days adjusting intake and so on.
<---- my pic is from that Saturday morning.
