    Another swap wiring problem?

First things first, i researched alot before i tackled the swap. I searched for days for all needed information.

I a little back ground on myself, VW expert certified, ASE certified and UTI graduate. I am a great tech, not saying i am the best, but i have been out of the Car world for a while now that i am in the Army. Electrical schematics do not scare me, although i wish the Bentley was running the Bosch diagrams.

I have an E36 Bentley, E30 Bentley on PDF and E30 Wiring on PDF.

I did alot of extra work to this swap, which you may or may agree with, but if you cant help, please do not comment. I wanted a clean daily driver, that didnt break the bank. I did modifications that cost more time than money. I relocated the fuse block to under the dash, i de-pined the unit and pulled the harness though. i took pictures of the block prior to disassembly, but i accidentally deleted all the saved pictures. i am pretty sure i have all the relays and fuses in the correct place. I know i have the wires all correct because i wrote all down on paper. that it the first hurdle.

Hurdle 2, i did a wire tuck on the bay. when i had the engine out i wired up the harness on the engine. I eliminated the factory splices for space savings and added solder/heat shrink joints and straight splices in their place. i did one wire at a time. i used the plugs as reference to make sure i didnt forget anything. i now have the plugs reconnected to the harness including the diag. i extended the x20 to reach to the fuse block and modified/spliced the body side of the c101.

Ok with all the back ground down, this is what i have:

1996 m52 converted to obd1, running a red label 413. car is a Early 87 325es. no fuel pump activation due to DME not grounding the relay. No spark.

    I have checked the following:

Power at pin 26 and relays for fuel pump and DME, so + connection i good.

Power at 54 so DME relay is working and supplying switch +

Power at 56, so ignition + is good

Ground at 15 reading 240 ohms like TM says

grounds at pins 6, 34, 55 all good.

    Ground at 28 is good

Crank sensor at DME is reading 500 ohms.

Cam sensor i questionable, but this wont cause a no start.

Power and grounds are good at the coils

Fuel pump runs when i manually ground the control side of the relay, still no spark

    DME case is Grounded.

Grounded the light harness in the engine bay just in case.

Wires that are not hooked up yet:

    c101 2, 4, 10, 20

    x20 3-12, 15, 16, 20, 24

Check light is flashing at me, but according to the pinout i used the DME is not connected to it.

The coversion parts came froma wrecked 93 325i. i didnt kjnow the guy, but bought it privately, and he swore it was a great running car. i asked about the check engine light and he said yes it was on prior to accident. the intake boot was fucked so i figured it was that along with the white plugs. The m50 was hit hard, both mount arms were cracked along with the valve cover. the m52 was pulled from a car that was driven to the junkyard.

I can supply all the pics you may want to see. I didnt put the harness away yet kinda figuring something like this may happen. YOu are more than welcome to call me or stop by haha. Case of beer to the guy that gets this going.

    update;

Replaced DME with 2 i got at the yard today. no luck.

Also tried a crank sensor, but it was unknown condition.

replaced the crank trigger wheel with the original from the m50, no luck.

one thing i did notice was that i can get the fuel pump to activate when i turn the key off. while turning the key off it will run for a split second. makes no difference if i turn fast, slow, or try to find a sweet spot to keep it run.

Did you change wire lengths for the crank sensor? It's sheileded and can get angry if you start fiddling with it. Technically speaking the engine harness only needs like 3 connections to the body to start

, i did not lengthen the crank sensor. the only think i lengthened was the harness to reach the c101. maybe the diag plug, but not much.

On a side note, when i took the harness off the engine i labeled all plugs. i decided to check anyway this afternoon, and the first one i checked was wrong. they had the iat plugged into the vanos solenoid. So now iam going to check all the rest and check for short to grounds as well.

to check the Crank sensor, use the 2 outside pins for ac signal, right? i am getting a/c voltage when cranking, so i am figuring that is good.

Update: checked all plugs and found 4 plugs wrong. PO bought the car form someone that put an engine it. I guess we found out why the light was one. iat and coolant gauge were swapped. vanos and something else were messed up also.

        STILL NO START

i thought i found the problem. the black wire going to pin 43 for the cps had a short to ground. i assumed it was in the harness from the accident and the wire was touching the shielding. i ran a temporary wire and cut out the old one and found it still had a no start. rechecked short to ground and found that the dme is grounding that wire. CAN anyone tell me if this is normal

also where do i hook up the check engine light and speed signal to the dme. is it behind the cluster or is there a better spot to hook it up around the glovebox?

my check light is flashing, but is not hooked up to the DME

IIRC the 325e has no CEL. there's nothing to wire it to.

VSS you want to tap into the green wire coming out of the back of the speedo that goes to the cruise control. later cars have this in the C101 but early ones like yours do not, so you have to run a wire.

as far as wiring, I wouldn't use the Bentley.. look for the ETM for your year of 325e and the same for your E36 donor.

you have been checking a lot of specific stuff but you don't have a little problem, you have a big problem and you need to check big things..

first an easy thing..try your dme in other car..my dme case isn't gorunded and the car starts, run and all of that, doesn't matter to you.

second, if i understand you..you have make some mods to your wiring or some electrical components..a smart guy first try to start the car with the STOCK wiring..when the car run...the guy do the modificationes...so...find a stock harness and try to start with it.

this two things are two BIG importants thing to check.

Stock harness is out of the question. Won't reach the fuse block. And I tried 2 other DME's.

I don't feel that there is a big problem. Everything is working as it should except the fuel pump ground. I have a new cam and crank sensor on the way.

I don't get why you extended the harness to reach the fuse box? the power should tap right into the junction on the passenger side where the DME goes?

Extended the wires going to the c101 next to the fuse box.

You messed with the wiring and lost control of it. At this point it is possible that some of the electronics are damaged.

I understand how it looks on paper, but trust me the wiring is still under control. Just have a slight issue. Well maybe a little more than slight. Still should be able to diagnose and repair like normal. All I did was extend the harness to reach the fuse block.

Yea I am aware of some messed up electronics, but really the only think than could get messed up should be the DME, and I thinks its doubtful.

And please don't assume that I am over my head. I don't quite understand quite what you were trying to say by quoting my first post. I am not trying to be rude either.
