Yeah, you're right about that. Any e30 cluster will work, but is it going to be accurate? Thats the question.

No, wrong! I have this setup and it is not accurate.

    Follow me on this now.

If you have a e30 m3 cluster, your tach goes up to 8k. This coding plug is for an 8k tach and a 4 cyl motor.
If you have a e30 325i cluster, your tach goes up to 7k. This coding plug is for an 7k tach and a 6 cyl motor.

If you put a 325i coding plug (meant for a 7k gauge face) into a m3 cluster (8k gauge face), it will work, it just won't be accurate. With that setup, if the gauge shows 8k, the motor is really at 7k. You see?

I don't think the 318is cluster will work. They do no have a coding pin... at least the two I have had experince with.

Also, I used my 84 318i tach, and an eta pin. It worked fine, but above 6k it bounced up to like 6500... not a biggy.

What do you do if you have an 8k redline? the e30 m3 tach would go past as well as the 325is tach...

Then you got to send your cluster to someone like www.nhspeedometer.com or that other thing mentioned in this thread.

Yeah, I wanna look into trying a m5 coding plug and see if that will get the tach to read correctly.

Anyone know if both e28 and e34 tachs go up to 8k?

Mine too. And the tach works and is accurate with the 325i coding plug installed.

Yours is a 1991. So was Hall's and his did not have a pin... Another guy I spoke with did not either... I am lost, then again BMW was never very consistant.

All US market 318is' are 1991 model year.

same here. I have zero problems whatsoever in that area. My car is also a 1991 of course and a very late production car. Tach works great and i bought a used plug for like $10!

I'm doing an m50 swap. Can't I just use an e36 cluster in my car? (assuming I can make it fit). I haven't finished all my research yet, but if I'm using an e36 wiring harness and ecu, wouldn't the speedo and tach work just as if they were in an e36?

                        Thanks

Ohh alright, I thought the coding plug didnt have anything to do with the RPMS but more so the number of cylinders for the car, I was thinking that the auctual tach would read the plug, kinda hard to explain my train of thought but I understand what you are saying and that would be correct. I was wrong.

Maybe if you change the connections.
I tried to hook an E36 up to the conn. in a 635csi and it didn't really do anything but light up random things.

Right now I am attempting at swapping part of an E36 wiring harness (body harness) into the E30 to make the E36 cluster and OBC work.
YEAH RIGHT, I'm gonna get PWND. Oh well I'm still trying!

Thats badass, Ive been thinking about doing that for a while. I just dont have the time or the funds to sink into that stuff right now.

If you need any help or need wiring diagrams I have just about every BMW schematic, ETK, or anything you need.
