    Need some advice

    Hi r3vers,

I am hoping that you guys are able to tell me how to solve the issue I am currently having. It isn't a huge issue, but still an irritant I would like to resolve asap.

    Here is the situation:

I have a s50 swapped e30, with zf transmission. I wanted a better suited diff ratio for the zf transmission. I purchased a used 3.07 torsen LSD from a non-m z3. I had a shop do the install just before the car was put away for the winter. I had told them just to install the z diff as I was under the understanding it would be a direct swap. When I picked up the car they said they ran into a snag, but that they had figured it out. Apparently when they installed the z diff, the e30 wire wouldn't plug into the z speed sensor. Then they tried the e30 sensor in the z3 diff, but apparently it would not fit. So then they put the e30 diff cover on the z3 torsen diff and the speed sensor from the e30 obviously fit. That's how they left it.

When I picked up the car I was amazed at how perfectly suited the ratio was for the set up, but, the speedo was not working. I am guessing that this is because the e30 sensor is not set up to read the torsen internals from the z diff. I called the shop when I got home and they said they would revisit it when the car came back out of storage.

I just called them and apparently over the winter they threw out my old e30 diff and the z speed sensor. *face palm*.

What is the best way for me to resolve this? Should I buy another z diff cover and sensor, and try to splice that sensor into the e30 wiring? Any input is much appreciated.

yeah, the toothed wheel for the sensor is a different diameter and the sensor itself is a different depth. the solution here is to wire the Z3 plug into your E30 wiring and use the Z3 sensor.

Ok, so I need to source a new z diff cover and sensor.

      Thanks nando.

I was speaking with a guy over on bimmerforums and he suggests that I just get an e30 sensor wheel which will press onto the z3 torsen diff, then the e30 cover and sensor that I already have bolted up will work! Seems like a cheaper alternative!

Though you have to tear the diff halfway apart.
