    Should I boost an M30 or M50?

    My m20 blew in the last 300 miles of a 2000 mile road trip a couple weeks ago. I've been weighing the pros and cons of different engine swaps since. I know I want another BMW inline 6 motor for simplicity and so I have space for a turbo.

    The question is, which engine should I get? I think Im leaning towards an m30.
    I love the sound of mid range torque in the 3.5L, and I was thinking that a turbo would make up for the lack power in the higher rpms.
    Also, the more modern DOHC 24v m50 scares me a little bit, it sounds like more to potentially go wrong when I add forced induction.

    Are these assumptions accurate?
    TIA

    Edit: By the way, I want to build a reliable DD anywhere in the range of 200-300 hp and 10-15 psi

    you can boost that much on a stock, un-rebuilt m30 with stock head gasket all day. so yeah, do that.

      M30 turbo = WIN and you can easily reach 300hp on low boost

        How do you plan to fuel this M30 at 15psi? Can you blow through the AFM that much boost? How do you tune this?

        I am going to go out on a limb and assume your going to need MegaSquirt of some sort of fuel management to do all this.

        Can the M30 DME be chip tuned or used in tandem with the onstrich software? Please enlighten me.

          Sweet, I would probably still get a thicker head gasket and studs to be safe.

          I'm not sure. What's AFM? I haven't looked into tuning yet.

          Yea, I'm definitely gonna get bigger injectors.

          I have no idea.

            Air Fuel Meter. Which I'm pretty sure stock M30s use...
            M50s stepped it up to a MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor.

            Then if you went with something like MegaSquirt you would use a MAP (Mass Air Pressure) sensor.

            This shits is turbo 101.

              Wow, that clears a lot up. I'm 19, this is my first time doing an engine swap and a trubo. Do you have any good references I can read up on? I am in the process of making money so I can buy a few books and a writeup.. I get paid next week

                AFM = Air flow meter
                MAP = Manifold absolute pressure

                  Yours would be the first "trubo" e30. Btdubs.

                    May I recommend, being that this is your first serious mechanical endeavor, that you get the m30/driveline/etc in, running & driving, THEN add turbo a bit later.

                    Don't bite off more than you can chew......
