Might just be time for a new motor...

What appears to be exhaust from the oil cap? Can't be good. Ugh fuck this motor right now.

IMHO, you need to get the car to a professional. You have been fucking with the car too long. need to check the basics. I would not worry about the exhaust coming through the oil filler. you had a good compression test, so it should run the way that it is. I had a weird problem once where one runner on the exhaust was clogged, couldn't figure it out for ever. it had a bad valve for so long it carboned up the manifold. i replaced the engine when i bought it, and took quite a while and 3 mechanics looking at it before we decided what it was. I am telling you this because a good compression test may mislead you, but it will still run. look for broken camshaft/valvetrain.

If i were closer i would like to help, but not being able to touch it makes it very hard. Did you figure out the fuel pressure problem or the RPM sensor repaired?
Looking for late model fogs, E39 Fog lights, cool cheap 17 5x120 wheels.

You've been very helpful. At this point, yes I am stumped. The only problem is there are very limited shops here that would or could properly work on something like this. Not only is it a BMW, but it's been engine swapped and OBD1 converted. I have been in contact with a guy who knows what he'd be looking at. I may just bite the bullet and tow it over to him.

              Have you leaked it down?

A leak down test will show if there is pressure from the combustion chamber going into the crank case like it seems.

A strange head gasket failure could cause similar issues. This HG had a failed fire ring between #4/#5. Resulted in 2 cylinders not miss firing and 0 compression in both as the pressure would just exit out the now attached cylinder through opened exhaust valves

Leakdown test showed the compression to hold within 10% or so.

Ignore the exhaust for now. sort the running problem. did you do anything to the timing chains? did you ever repair the cps and fuel pressure issue?

Fuel pressure was fine. It got to and held proper pressure. When the car was misfiring terribly it would bounce around but when it was running that poorly I don't think it was an actual fuel pressure problem. I'm not losing fuel through the fpr vacuum hose.

Tried to drill and extract the cps retaining bolt, broke an extractor off in the hole. Ugh. I may just have to put a new front timing cover on it without a mangled mounting bracket.

                          You have a clogged cat.
Also, check the connections and the harness for the fuel rail. See if the resistor is burned up.

Exhaust is disconnected before the cat. The wiring in the plastic box beside the fuel rail looks fine, I didn't want to pry into the plastic part I'm assuming holds the resistor and ruin it.

if the exhaust is free, and the wiring is perfect... This is a toughy. It's not the motor. Have you swapped ecu's? I would open the ecu you have and check to see if the injector drivers aren't burned up.
If you get that bogging sound in the intake, thats the misfiring of the injectors. That or they aren't firing at all, but you said you had an occasional intake backfire?

My last suggestion would be to check the continuity from the CPS and cam sensor back to the ecu. Also the speed sensing wire pin 14 on the c101 connector. you can also try running it with the cam and tps disconnected.
