Yep, should have just done it properly and gotten a re-pinned harness and flashed DME from you in the first place. Thought it would be easier, quicker and cheaper to swap the OBD1 harness off the M50 since I already had it and it was running fine before. Fucking wrong.

Does the engine have proper timing? Have you checked?

I have locked the cams while the mark on the trigger wheel/timing cover were aligned, but it did seem as though it had quite a bit of play, as in it did not seem as though the cams were not moving right away as the crank did, but I attributed that to the upper chain tensioner not having oil in it. I did not seriously suspect timing before as it was an intermittent issue, but I suppose sometimes even chain tensioners fail in odd ways.

Pin lock in flywheel prevents crankshaft moving at all

Cam blocks prevent camshafts from moving; can't move nowhere.

chain tensioner tool allows to simulate a pressurized tensioner.

Perhaps get the timing tools set and do this again to make sure?

I just don't see how or why the crank could turn and the cams stay stationary for about 20 degrees of rotation. To me there should be very very little play between them. I'm going to put the flywheel pin in now and see how or if it all lines up,but it still strikes me as odd that with the cams locked, the mark on the tone wheel can stray 10 degrees either way of the mark on the timing case.

My brothers S52 (now mine) had a pretty bad misfire issue when he rebuilt the vanos. he made his own tool to lock the cams, and it looked great but I think we ended up clamping them with something different. He had a misfire/rough idle when we finished. He bought the tool and used it the next time and it fixed it and ran perfectly. Try that, and then next, I would probably take it to someone.

                I wish you the best.

Cam lock in, crank lock in, TDC marks line up.

                  BUT

the two front cam lobes are not facing each other at a 45 degree angle, which from what I read they should. So somehow, this motor that has never had the timing altered has the timing off by 180 degrees?
