Start by making sure that all cylinders are firing. I recommend an IR thermometer on the exhaust manifold (it's like $20 and really useful).
Lifters sound REALLY BAD!

Ok so I held it at 3k RPMs for three minutes. After doing that twice, it is nice and quite.
Huge BUT is I shut it down and tried to restart and it won't start. :-(
I'm running a 413 red label with a stock M50 chip right now. Hopefully that didn't screw something up.Comment

I tried again and it started fine. And now I have code 1223 for coolant temp sensor.
Just to be certain, the black sensor at the front of the head is for the DME correct?
I know this isn't related but my coolant temp gauge doesn't work even though I put the e30 sensor in place of the blue/2nd temp sensor in the head.Comment

FWIW my M50TU in my E30 has lifter tap when it sits for more than a month or two. Start it up, let it get warm, hold revs to like 2500 - 3000 for about 30 secs then shut it off. Come back in 10 mins and its fine. If I just drive the car it resolves itself also.
