going to look at an M52tu today, how do I make sure everything's straight

Getting possibly a great deal on an alloy block m52tu from a 99 z3. It has purportedly 48k miles on it.

Short of demanding compression test #s, what other things should I look for to help prevent getting a POS motor?

    comp and leakdown numbers....

    its always a crap shoot.

I own a 99 z3...180k..they are pretty bullet proof overall....
I love sitting down and just driving!

Pull the valvecover if you can, that should give you a good idea if the 48k claim could be legit. It should pretty much look brand new. Im excited about this :)

Is there a vin stamp on the back of the head? That could give you mileage estimate and why the car was taken off the road
Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

            Leak down test

Bring compressor and leak down tester kit.

            Preform test on 1.2.3.4.5.6 cylinders

Then you = have the power of knowledge
