Doing the unthinkable. E36 Cluster in a E30.

I may just be having unneccessary hangups but things are, nonetheless, getting quite interesting.

    The Deal:
Put a 95 325i cluster and OBC into the E30.

    Bad idea:
Tear apart E36 body harness to get essential wiring for OBC and cluster.
Contemplate using check control module from a 95 M3.
Wonder what would happen if you changed out the wires for the ignition.
Worry about EWS having an effect... ah not to worry that can be bypassed.

The good news is I haven't cut anything on the E30 yet.
I think this might just be a walk in the park that quickly turns into a raping in the alley.
So what to do? I'm pretty sure none of you have done this, save for the guy doing the S54 swap. But I am about THIS CLOSE to saying screw it.

Maybe it will just have to be the E36 Cluster wired to the E30 instrument panel wires. I don't know. Whatever the outcome, I shall suffer undoubtable pain and agony. Woe to me.

Yes I will do a full writeup of this swap in the future.
Hopefully I can take some of the mysteries away and reveal a clear truth about such trials as putting an engine into a car that it shouldn't go into.
Should have just bought an E36. I kid.

what the fuck is the point, are the e36 gauges really that much more attractive than the e30 one's to you? you most likely will never get them to function 100% correctly, so is it really worth your time? also, it needs to fit into the dash, the size and shape isnt even close. more props to you if you do it, but it just seems like a huuuuge waste of time IMHO. goodluck.

Anxious to see some results though, whether it be the new cluster with E30 or E36 wiring. Mad props for trying such a huge project on your own.

No, it does fit. The finish is not too bad once it is in.
This car is not mine, it's for a friend. He wants his old guages in it.

Thanks Beej, we shall see what entails!

Interesting thought, and its probably not that difficult to wire once you really get into it.

I'd be curious on support for the speedo/fuel/and temp in terms of sending units. Although I think the e36 uses the same method to pull mph, and the fuel sending units can probably be adjusted.

Very interesting indeed, I'd like to see how this comes out.

However, you do realize that the E36 cluster is a totally different shape than the E30 unit.

The difference was noted. It doesn't look HORRIBLE, but no it isn't a perfect fit.

Might as well put an e36 dash it while your at it.

When do you expect to have it done?

Haha, actually by Tuesday I'm hoping.
                      You never know...
I'm running into worse problems.. I think.

                      Dan, no faith?

what is the point to all this.... just buy different gauge faces if you think the stock cluster looks dated... all the e30 gauges work fine with the swap save for me not being able to get my 8k m3 tach to read correctly.... what does the e36 cluster do that the e30 doesnt???nothing

just the look of those wires makes me feel ill... dont get me wrong it would be awesome if you got it to work just for a wow factor but is it gonna be worth a near suicide inducing wiring job

Good luck. I already told Adeel I didn't think you'd be able to make it work.

If i was going to go to all this trouble I would be doing either:
                            Independent motometer units

                            or a Stack.

                            Stack FTW.
                            Im now E30less.
