s52 swap, s54 swap gets very expensive very fast. general maintenance parts on a s54 are much more expensive right now. Including but not limited to oil changes.

If going from a stock 325 to a s52 powered e30, You'll enjoy it greatly.

Like everyone said check the fluids. it looks like the motor has been sealed up. I would first check the oil, if any then pull the plugs and inspect them for and if you can grab a borescope. If you can get it to crank a compression test or a leakdown test will tell you alot about its current condition.

What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with the s52 transplanted into the e30? I realize that this is not a gas mileage focused car. But, I would like to be able to get 21 mpg around town with the conversion. I assume that the s52 was tuned for 91 octane? Thanks for the info.

ON EDIT: I already discovered that the s52 is in fact a 91 octane motor. But, what kind of mileage are you guys getting in an e30 body?

Gearing and driving styles have a lot to do with mileage. Low to mid 20's is possible though

If your primary concerns are centered around low cost and fuel mileage, an S52 swap may not be the right decision.

Conversely, if you're prepared to spend the money up front to get the swap and the car sorted properly, it will be very reliable and fun.
