Can oil mix with coolant if the gasket for the timing cover goes bad, ???
what else other than a head gasket will cause oil in the coolant

No a bad timing cover wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) mix with coolant. Do you have any pictures?

It can though. Water pump is sealed against block there as well as oil from timing chains
