Well, I paid $125. But, that front cover is cracked, the plastics on top are cracked, no starter, no alternator, no a/c, the steering pump and rack are another $100. The motor is out of an automatic transmission car and has 153k miles on it.

What cover is cracked? Better pictures? I might have the part.

If the rack is in good shape and not leaking, yes it's worth the $100.

The cover is right near the lifting ring at the front of the motor. There is a canister that is connected to it. It think it has something to do with vanos maybe. You can see the crack and the canister in one of those pics.

Ah probably the front plate of the vanos. Not a bad replacement. The part is cheap enough and it's easy to get to.

Do you know if it is the same on the M52? I found a local M52 for parts.

As was mentioned, the M3 rack is worth the money. The line that they cut won't fit in an E30 anyway, the "cooler" is too big. There is nothing special about the pump (all E36 have that pump) and the reservoir should be replaced because it has a built in filter in it.

The "canister" is the VANOS solenoid, take the solenoid off and reuse it. I think it is the VANOS cover that's cracked which isn't a big deal, you'll just need a different VANOS unit. They are a dime a dozen on all E36 also, only the solenoid is different between OBD1 and OBD2. It probably needed a rebuild anyway. I have one that needs to be rebuilt if you are interested. Beisan systems has everything you need to rebuild it.

There isn't anything in the engine bay that you need.

Thank you all for your help. I don't plan on doing the swap until winter, so I have time to get these details in order. I just had to rush this part of the job and get these parts before they are crushed. I really appreciate all of your help. Thanks.

                  Hey guys,
Do I need to get the OBD II test port? I took the destroyed wiring harness anyway and two computers out of the passenger firewall. One is the DME, what is the other one? Do I need it?

The other one is the auto trans computer.
