    E30M50: ltw flywheel options

    E30M50 with E36 transmission (1:1 5th) and s3.25.

What are my lightweight flywheel options?

Has anyone tried the UUC stage 1 11# flywheel? Do I need to change my clutch to the M3 one or will this 11# flywheel work with my existing clutch?

Car is mainly street driven, maybe ocassional track.

    Thanks

lightweight flywheel needs the matching clutch disc, you may also need to change the clutch slave pump

Instead of spending the big bucks on a lightweight alluminum e36 flywheel, you can use a machined down m20 flywheel with an e30 clutch. If you have the backside of the m20 flywheel shaved down, you can get it down to 12lbs pretty easily.

That's what we did on the m50 swap at work...

I have the UUC stage 2 clutch kit with the ultrasmooth cerametallic clutch disc. Its an awesome clutch. It's a little heavy for regular street use but with time you get used to it. Here is a thread I did on Bimmerforums, check it out if you want. Like I said though, this clutch kicks ass, well worth the money. ;) http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=550007

Find a 320i euro flywl, about 14lbs, I got mine for $35, and they machined it for me for free, seller was in nashville so I just picked it up.

First of, SORRY TO RESURRECT THIS!

I was under the impression that the clutch/flywheel combo depends on which tranny you use... Or am I completely mis-informed?

mis-informed. you can run either clutch with either tranny. just have to use matching clutch/flywheels.

The Getrag and the ZF have different sized input shafts(both E36 trannies), therefore the clutch disk is different.

oh really? i was under the impression that e36 stuff could be used on getrag260 trannys...if this is not true, then im in trouble...

The tip of the shaft that slides into the pilot bearing is a different size between the e30 and e36, but the splines that hold the clutch should be the same.

I just finished installing my ZF tranny today and I used my e30 clutch allignment tool, so I know the splines are the same.

The last swap I did for a customer, if I used a machined down e30 flywheel and clutch, with an e36 Getrag tranny.

So in conclusion, make sure to use the pilot bearing matched for the tranny, and use the starter matched for the flywheel. All the splines on the trannies are the same.
