    M50 - adding engine displacement

    Whats the most cost effective way to increase the engine capacity of my M50 2.5?

    More power wouldn't go amiss...

    take the m50 out and then put in a s50.

            The responses may not have seemed serious, but they are. There is no "cost effective" way to increase displacement.

            The cheapest solution to increasing displacement is to get a complete, used M52B28 bottom end and mate it to your good cylinder head and throw in some S50 cams. That's about the cheapest way to go about increasing displacement and output. Don't go down the road of building a bottom end up. That ends up costing a lot more money than most people will anticipate.

              I'm only assuming you are thinking that displacement will increase power, which isn't the entire story. Manifold and cylinder head porting/port-matching, along with S50 cams will net you more power for less money than buying oversize pistons.

                    S50 cams are often up for sale on bimmerforums for aruond $250-300 depending on condition / mileage.

                      When mating an M50 head with a M52B28 bottom end, are any mods required or do they fit straight up? What engine displacement will I end up with?

                          Well said. Also, the 2.8 bottomend is like a 'baby 3.0' in that you're only running 2mm less bore and stroke. Both are relatively square (86x85.8 vs 84x84).

                          3.0's and 3.2's definately make the most power, and the kick in the ass you get at lower revs will depend on how many CC's you can afford

                            I got cams for $250 and a chip for $200 new from AA. They were on sale last month.
