For E36 it says 7 quarts (6.5 litres), for E34 it says 6 quarts (5.75 litres).

I would assume for E30s with 24v swap and E34 pan it would be 6 quarts right?

    This makes sense to me.

I've put 8 quarts in my S50 with no harm done, but I would assume you would begin getting some windage from the crank.

Local auto parts place said 6.1 which is consistent with my dipstick so apparently this is still a mystery.
          Does everyone overfill by default?

I think the idea of overfilling came from the E36 world. When you auto-x or track with these engines, you tend to get a lot of post valve tick. This is caused by some oil starvation to the lifters. It doesn't really hurt the motor, but it obviously affects valve lash.

Anyways, most E36 guys overfill by one quart to try and combat these effects, but the problem remains with anyone you drive their cars near the limit.

When I overfilled in my E30 by two quarts I still got valve tick.
