I used the e36 shift carrier that came with my ZF trans from a 98 M3. Right in the center.

I got in e30 mood and i want to start getting a list of things I need, and parts bought for when i get back home in June. I drove my car for a few hundred miles before i had to park it and the shifter was not how i want it. I used the e36 carrier and i did not like how it was to the right, it was not really just that either, it just felt way off. After searching and finding my thread, it left me with more questions. the e36 carrier is centered but to the right, the e30 one is forward but in the middle. What are people using other than these two options? Matt, you said you found the 318ti carrier to work are there any other tried and true carriers that are close to dead center with the ZF tranny and s50? maybe i will just order the 318 unit...

You can tell from that the pic that the e30 carrier isn't ideal.
I'm getting a e36 carrier. Just thought this might help someone else.

I put mine in and saw that my shifter isn't centered, I checked everything over 10 times until I looked at the two carriers side by side. You can see it clear as day in the OP's pic, I've drawn a centerline through the cradle so it's obvious. It's not a huge deal or anything, I can still engage 5th no problem and since no one's mentioned it I guess so can they (I haven't driven my car yet). Just something to consider when using a transmission that's known for being happy to go into any gear any time, with 2nd gear being a little too close to where 4th should be...

the shifter on top is e30 and the shifter on bottom is e36, right?

    I'm confused now....

You said the shifter was off center with the e36 carrier, so does that mean with the e30 piece it won't be?

I'm just trying to get the correct part before I install one and figure out it doesn't work properly.
They'll probably both work. Looking at the pic, the E30 one will put your shifter further forward in the hole, the E36 one a bit to the right.

Stick with the E36 part, which you've already ordered.

    What I did:

Get a few and swap them around to find the one that fits best and puts the shifter where you want it, then make a custom length selector rod that also puts the shifter where you want it.

I am actually using an e36 318i shifter carrier with my e36 325i trans and driveshaft. Works great.

There is so much swapping around possible with shifters, it's not even funny.

I just used what I had. Mine is a 89 325i alum carrier.I didn't even know that people had the issue of it being short. Only issue I had was Shifter rubbing on the driveshady but that's from using a z4 lever.
