Random wire. What is it?

Hey, my m50 I've got has a wire spliced into an ignition coil wire by the previous owner. Any idea what this could be? I was thinking aftermarket tach? Maybe....

1989 332IS -S-Fiddy Four-Some weight removed.
5 lug E36 M3 Brakes Coilovers and LTW's and No ABS.

I haven't got a pic at the moment but its just a small gauge wire that is coming off an ignition coil wire and goes to nothing......
