Catch cans, who uses them, are they needed/better setup?

came across some youtube videos on using catch cans for the m50/m52 motors.

Deletes the PCV valve, big black cone looking thing.

Seems they use the ebay one for like $15.

What is your current setup and have you noticed any smoke on heavy engine braking or general hooning? If not then the stock m50/s50 crank case Vacuum system is all you really need. If it is burning oil or oil is accumulating in the m50 manifold then you might want to consider a catch can. in General an engine likes crank case vacuum from the manifold. Bmw engines specifically the m54, as it helps seal the piston rings. If its not burning oil then I wouldn't worry about it but I would use the stock system at a minimum.

I'm currently dealing with oil burning issues and I ponyied up for the stock cyclone separator and it has helped with some issues but I get puffs of smoke on heavy engine braking.

They generally don't do a whole lot on non-boosted motors unless like Zeke mentioned; there are other issues. Even then your just masking the issue.

I don't notice any extra smoke, but I'm also not behind the car either.

Was just wondering if this really is something that could help or if it's best left alone.

This is what I get for late night videos on youtube lol

My boosted E30 smokes like hell when I used catch can. I just let it VTA and it fixes the smoke issue. A little oil spray never killed anyone.... Especially when you're tearing up the track!
