BMW E30 320i Touring M52B28 swap using stock drivetrain

    Hi Guys,

I just started rebuilding a M52B28 engine and preparing to swap these into my '89 320i Touring next summer.

My plan is to use as much of the stock drivetrain of my 320i Touring. Sorted out most but still needs some confirmation and advice from you guys.

I am planning to use the following setup:

    - Getrag 240 gearbox (stock)
    - M20 320i flywheel (stock -> machined and balanced while needed)
    - 228mm clutch (stock)
    - 323i throw out bearing (needed as I understand right)
    - 320i Touring propshaft (stock)

Can you guys confirm this is doable or are there any using the same setup? Need the shift linkages need to be modified for example? And how is it related to the clearance with using my stock propshoft? I did read others do use often a 325i E36 propshaft.

Thanks in advance for your help.

no, this is the right subforum.

the M20B20 and M52 are mounted at different angles, so your transmission will rotate relative to its position with the M20.

      you will need to
      - fabricate or find a transmission mount that incorporates the new angle
      - modify the linkage to incorporate a 12 degree twist
      - modify the linkage carrier to be positioned in a reasonable place

the stock propshaft will work, your motor/transmission flange does not change position other than being rotated.

you should not need a 323i TOB.

Thanks for your response. Not the answer I was hoping for, but there should be people on this forum who did this before. Since I am quite new here, do you have any link to a topic where I can read how to modify the shift linkages in the right way?

I by the way also have a 320i E36 gearbox. What should you guys recommend and should be easier to swap?

you should read through the stickies in this subforum, they detail the things you'll need to know.

the E36 box will be easier to work with.

FWIW, you will need to get your flywheel machined to clear the M52 oil pan.

Already did but there is a lot of info and it looks like the search funtion don't like me

Will give it another try this evening.

I know about the machining of the M20 flywheel and this won't be a problem. I read about 1 mm is already enough?

Search in Google for better search results on r3v.
                r3v/24 valve swap
                or
                r3v/24 valve swap clutch
Either of those will get you closer to 24v e30 knowledge.

Thanks, I will try that and for sure find something usefull overhere :).

Could by the way anyone tell me what exact Getrag I have too (G260?).

Part numbers I found on the gearbox are as follows:
                  # 2200022597
                  # 013
                  # 225
                  # 12218459

Did already fill in the numbers on Google and it looks like a Z3 / E36 gearbox. If this one is easier for the swap I would use this gearbox, since I could already prepare it now.

Am I looking at the wrong numbers that I still don't know where this one is from. Google does show me gearboxes from a E36 318i, 320i, etc.

                    Also Getrag 225, 250, 260..

Would be nice if someone can tell me what I have in house.
