    Head will not come off

    I'm in the middle of changing my head gasket and I can't get the head to come off. I counted the head bolts to make sure I had them all out, I removed the bolts holding it to the timing chain cover as well as the manifold and chain. But the head won't move at all, am I forgeting something? Do I just need a bigger hammer.

      My friend and I had the same problem replacing his 92 nv M50 HG. We used a large rubber mallot and whacked it pretty good, just be careful.

        Keep in mind the head weighs a fair amount. You might not even be lifting it enough to get it off.

          The head gasket is probably stuck to the head and the block, preventing you from removing it. Try wedging a plastic putty knife in between the head and the block to see if you can get it free. I wouldn't use anything metal however as you could damage the mating surface of both the head and the block.

            dont forget the small torques. on the intake side, near the vanos, there is a recessed hole (probabily filled with oil) that has a smaller torques bolt. jason

              Exactly what I was thinking, 2 or 3 on the front if I remember right, you will need a 1/4 drive torx E8 socket to get in there though

                on m50, there are 3 small torx, on m52 there are 2.
