    1986/09 eta transmission + S52?

    Hey guys.

So I'm very likely going to be picking up an S52 with the OBD1 bits this weekend but I am wondering about the transmission. I have an eta, production date 09/1986 (last 7 digits 9698305). I want to get a nice JBR flywheel for the S52 as well. Can I use my transmission with no fitment issues? I'm finding sketchy info about some eta transmissions having an extra long bellhousing... but even then I just need a different throwout bearing. Anyone know for sure or even have the same car that did the swap and kept the trans?

    Thanks!
    D

Also, I don't know what transmission I have but the flywheel is dual mass if that helps (know from changing clutch).

Hey dude! So looks like I'll be joining the DOHC E30 family afterall. I'm getting a pretty sweet deal on an S52 and pretty much all OBD1 bits (except an E34 oil pan). I hope I can haul it around myself... I'll probably be putting the engine together in the corner of the livingroom...

Thanks a lot man! You guys are the best! Wish I was rich enough to have you build me a racecar but then what's the pain... uh, fun in that?

as long as the eta transmission was built after 4/86, it's the same 260 found in the 325i cars. The ones before 4/86 don't have the improved synchros or strengthened shift fork

realoem lists a different one for my 09/86 e and say, an 87 i.

                  260/5.10-TNT on the e from 04/86
                  260/5.15-TNW on the i up to 06/88

No idea what the difference is... I know the gearing is the same and it's the same strong tranny, I just need to know that it will work with the S52 with a single mass, lightweight flywheel. What clutch and T/O bearing would I need?

The only issue you're going to run into is the shifter carrier... you may have the mounting points for the aluminum one or not. If you don't you'll have to use the steel shifter carrier, which sucks.

There will be plenty of room in the bellhousing for whatever clutch and flywheel you want to use. I am pretty sure they all use the same throwout bearing anyway.

I would much rather use an e36 trans.

I'm not sure what you mean about the mounting points. My transmission has an aluminum carrier...

RE: E36 trans, it's another thing I have to buy (and fish for a driveshaft), my tranny is solid and I just put in my 3.73 which would be unacceptable with a 1:1 5th.

Your driveshaft will work with one of the e36 transmssions. Cant get around the gear ratuis though.

Your shifter will have to be bent, but it'll work.

Hmm, from all the swap threads I've read, people say you have to find an E30 M3 driveshaft or have a custom one made. (not trying to tell you how it is, just what I "heard"...)

Yeah that's cool. I didn't actually know it was even possible. Then Trent told me all I need is some creativity with mount selection and a bend in the shifter and I can keep my tranny.

The M3 driveshaft is only one option. Its not even close to being that simple though. DOnt feel like posting the whole story fro my phone.

You need a better phone. :p It's 5am and I've got the shits, posting with my E61. I could write a book with this keyboard.

Anyway, when you get a chance, please tell me more, I'm not sure what you're referring to as not being nearly that simple and why but I'd sure like to know.
