    The M/SX Process Sheet

    Alright I've been building this list for awhile but it's been put on the back burner. I originally wanted to create a step by step process with a neat application I'll be getting, but that will wait till I do another 24v swap and have the time to document everything with pictures, etc.

    So basically this is a logical process to follow to put a 24v motor into an E30. Feel free to contribute/clarify this stuff so then we can add it to bdi_fc's wiki so his site becomes an incredible resource. Later on I'll make it into an application that is nearly foolproof.

    Add Correct info here:
    http://www.e30dohc.com/wiki/index.ph..._Process_Sheet

    Someone sticky this.

    I. Intro

    ==============

    -> What is the E30 Twin Cam Swap / M/S5X Swap?

    The E30 Twin Cam Swap / M/S5X Swap is the result of putting an M/S50 family engine into an E30. Benefits...

    ==============

    -> What are the Engine differences / Transmission / ECU/DME / Differential differences?

    Engines:

    M50 2.5l (Vanos/Non) 189HP
    M52 2.8l (328i 528i) 189HP
    S50 3.0l (U.S. 1995 M3) 240HP
    S52 3.2l (U.S. 1996-99 M3) 240HP
    S50B30 EURO 3.0l (92-94 M3) 286HP
    S50B32 EURO 3.2l (95-99 M3) 321HP

    Transmissions:

    Getrag 260 - E30 Transmission
    Getrag 250 - E36 Transmission
    ZF - E36 Transmission

    ECU/DME:

    Differentials:

    3.25 LSD
    3.46 LSD
    3.73 LSD
    4.10 LSD

    ==============

    -> What engine is right for you?

    SEE CHART. How much of a budget you have, power wanted, etc.

    II. Getting Started

    -> Estimated Costs

    Loosely based chart something like this:?

    M50 - $1500-$4000+
    M52 - $2000-$4000+
    S50 - $3500-$8000+
    S52 - $4000-$8000+

    *Any input guys? I know I'm off, and this needs to be broken up more with usual cost of engine, plus all parts needed.

    ==============

    -> Parts List

    ________________

    1. E30 88' radiator, I used the e36 unit with the lower mounts raised

    2. E30 88' radiator over flow tank

    3. E30 M20 fan, poss. w/clutch / Electric Fan

    4. E28 533i motor mounts w/ 5mm spacers
    or E28 m5 mounts with out spacers
    *(installed in reversed holes in subframe - threads go in oval holes)

    5. E34 throttle cable <- Does E36 work aswell?

    6. E21 brake booster w/ modified shaft, to 15mm or
    or E30 325IX/E32 735 without mod to the shaft
    *it's more than 15mm, more like 70mm (just did one last week)

    7. E34 M5 or 25mm brake master cylinder w/ additional brake line used for the 325ix booster
    or a E32 735i with the modified 320i booster
    *e34 M5, 325ix or e32 735i(L) master cylinder with ix/735i(L) brake booster -or- stock e30, e30 M3 or e32 750i(L) master cylinder with modified 320i brake booster

    8. Getrag 260 = Custom Transmission Cross Member
    E36 Transmission (ZF, Getrag 250) = E30 Transmission Cross Member
    *trans member won't work, will have to be custom made (getrag 260 - m20 transmission)
    -or- e34 525i Crossmember (e36 trans, ZF or Getrag) - e36 crossmember may work, can't confirm this

    9. E28 M5 or two E21 320i trans mounts/ which are cheaper

    10. *e30 M3 driveshaft (e36 trans)
    -or- e30 325i driveshaft (m20 trans - getrag 260)

    11. Differentials:
    E30 diff. w/ 3:25 ratio
    E30 3:73 LSD
    E28 533i w/ 3:25 LSD

    12. E30 318 M42 ECU mount

    13. E34 M50 oil pan
    14. E34 M50 oil pickup

    15. 325i/3.0 M3s have the same exhaust manifolds (OBD I)
    328/3.2 M3s have the same manifolds (OBD II)

    16. M50 radiator hoses

    17. E36 M3 Motronic
    *Motronic is the same in the M3 as the 325i (as long as it has vanos), can be either 325i or M3 ECU with a custom chip

    18. OBDI intake manifold

    19. OBDI throttle body boot

    20. E36 alloy mounting arms

    21. OBDI wiring harness DO NOT BUY silver label “413” motronic, it has EWS (security), or get ews disabling performance chip

    22. the engine harness and the ECU can be E36 325i / E36 M3, E34 525i

    On the standard E30 with M20 engine fitted, you have the large round plug (C101) up on the firewall next to the brake booster.

    This plug has 2 parts. One half is connected to the car wiring, and the other is connected to the engine harness.

    When the M20 was removed, the engine side of the plug was removed with the engine. Now I have the S50 half of the plug in its place. Although similar in appearance, it will not plug directly into the E30 half of the plug.
    I removed the E36 engine half of the plug, and replaced it with an E30 one. This then allows the 2 parts to screw back together. All you need to make sure is that you have the correct wires connected to each other. Its not just pin 1 to pin 1 and pin 2 to pin 2 etc (although some of the wires do actually connect this way).

    This plug connection is the only point where the E30 & E36 wiring interface with each other. The rest of the E36 M3 engine harness is totally self contained.

    23. Exhaust = Custom.
    -> OBD I / OBD 2 E36 Manifolds / E36 Headers Work
    -> Downpipes
    -> Piping
    -> Cat?
    -> Piping
    -> Piping to Muffler / Cat-back System

    Some setups:
    OBD I Manifold -> E36 Downpipes -> Single 3" SS Piping-> High flow Cat -> Single In/Dual Out Muffler
    OBD I Manifold -> E36 Downpipes -> Dual 2.5" SS Piping -> High flow Cats -> Dual In/Dual Out Muffler
    OBD II Manifold -> E36 Downpipes -> Single 2.5 SS Piping -> High flow Cat -> Cat-back System (Afternarket / OEM)

    M50 - $1500-$4000 ($1500=welfare swap, lots of used parts, $4000 if you are matt)

    You can get a 3.46 from an auto 528e. Hopefully it's LS. :)

        You can create a page for this on the wiki (www.e30dohc.com/wiki) and it can be updated by everyone.

        Threads can be long and difficult to follow, especially with interloping posts like this. :p

          Good idea.

          Put it on e30dohc's wiki, after it is reworked it can be posted on here.

            A Euro S50B32 will run around $5900 and a Euro S50B30 will run $5500.

            The S50B32 will require you to wire in the EWS-II. I have the diagrams that I can lend to the wiki.

              Um, http://www.e30dohc.com/wiki/index.ph...Talk:Main_Page is the same thing as the process sheet, pretty much.

                You're killing me smalls.

                I guess it sorta is the same thing.

                The wiki has beaten me.

                        Woot.

                        Yeah, I went a little nuts with mine. Plus I had a bit of bad luck (read: stupidity) working against me.

                        It's been almost 5 months since my car last ran, mostly because of outside circumstances. I'm hoping to have it back up this weekend.

                          Cool. At the very least with all the $$$ parts you'll have a dead-nuts reliable car.

                            u can add as well there is the option for m42 318 guys to use the getrag 240 outta thier 318is's with the euro e21 323i TOB for an m50 swap. thing is linkage will be need to custom(sifter rod and selector rod) and a e30 325i 5spd driveshaft will be needed. as far as the linkage, you can mix and match other selector rods and shifter from other cars but i just customized it to size myself...oh and for the remote resevoir u can use the 2002 reservoir with DSM soft lines. from one Devon to another:D

                              We'll see... I'm not holding my breath. It's a pretty clean swap though. I can hardly wait to post some pics.
