Interesting and pretty sucktastic. $300 for a used bottom end from Strictly german. I want a 2.8, but I kinda want to freshen my stuff too. Leakdown will be tested tomorrow night.

How many miles on your m50? What was it like with the s50 cams? I would say its probably toast as we all know.
I am thinking of going to 2.8 route as well since I am not to thrilled about the lack of low end torque that the 2.5 has. So the consensus is that we're almost better off picking up a 2.8 bottom end rather than building one? Granted the m52 in my dad's e39 has 175k on it and runs like a champ, but its got an auto and doesnt get driven quite as hard as my e30.Old and improved:

Hmm, this is quickly degenerating into the largest budget M50 swap in the history of man.
Man a few months back someone was selling a low miles fully assembled S50 shortblock for $1000 on bimmerforums.
I hope your luck turns around!

Pour a little bit of motor oli into combustion chambers from sprkplug holes, as anyone can tell, this will not cure broken engine, but sometimes M5* series engines strangely lose compression and only way to get them running is to put a dash of oil into cylinders. Nothing to lose, give it a try.Current:
BMW 320i 2d 2.0 m20 -88
BMW 325i Cabriolet 2.5 m50 -88
BMW 316i touring 1.6 m40 -90
BMW 320i 4d 2,2 m54 -01

I don't want to add up what I've spent on this car.
And it's only going to get worse. But I do like the sound of a 2.8 turbo with S50 cams...
