Help: Transmission Brace for Getrag 260

There's a couple threads touching on this subject, but no definitive answers that I've seen (unless its buried in the sticky)

Some people have talked about mass-producing a custom brace -but no results yet.

Please post PICS/ descriptions of what you have done to brace the stock Getrag 260 when using it with a 24V swap.

Total custom? stock brace with different mounts?

    thank you

people use the stock e30 trans brace with i think about a 1-1/2 to 2 inch welded spacer with the mounts. the spacer goes on the passenger side. but this is just from reading and shit so im probably as sure as you are. dan gillan is who i think i read it from when he did his m50.

EDIT: its the driver side. heres the link to page five. scroll down for the pics. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...t=66570&page=5

That is what I did... I made a cardboard cutout/ mockup, and then got some quarter inch steel bar, 2" wide. and welded it up just like my mockup cardboard thing. You have to do the mockup with the mounts attacked, it takes some tweeking after the welding to get it perfect. Use a propane torch, a vice, and a table with a good hard edge to get it perfect, the angles that is. Or just make your mock up perfect and you'll be fine.

This is bettter info than I've found from hours of searching. Thank you guys. I've heard of people doing it with all bmw manufactured brackets/ mounts as well. Any info on this?

If you are on a budget and limited to what you can fab up , you can always just use different sized OE mounts for both sides .

That pic of dan's set-up is also not ideal as it only has the drivers side compensated and the pass side is just a squashed stock mount .

I'll get pics of crap up by tomorrow night .

Can you elaborate a little more on the Diff OE mounts. Like what kind of OE mounts. And why do you have to use diff mounts. whats in the way, or is it just the way the new 24v sits in the bay im confused on this part a little bit and am having trouble finding this in the treads.
Eddit: Sorry i couldnt really see that pic really well and then it clicked as to what was there. But it is possible to use the stock trans brace but just use diff sized OE mounts. What ones happen to work the best with the stock barce???

Or you could use an e36 transmission and have no issues. No shifter mods, no mounting issues... mmm mmm

nah nah hes saying with the e36 TRANSMISSION you can use the stock e30 brace with no mods. i think then you would need different driveshaft parts.

-matt, what driveshaft combo are you using with the e36 trans?

Oh, you have to mod the shifter too. Where is all this at, burried in the sticky i hope not. I dont have an option for the trans i have to use my stock for now. What need to be done to all this. What happens to the shifter i just put the shifter from a Z3 from understeer.com into my car but is the slector rod to long or something.

You don't have to modify the shift linkage. Mine is just fine with the getrag 260 and stock linkage, just tilted a bit to the right.

Ok so whats the best way to do the set up with the stock brace for the getrag. Im just not finding it, because you dont have to make a custome braket like the one in the pic above do you. What are the best mounts that you guys would sugest using.

                              haha

I have no pictures, so I hope you can visualize well.

on the passenger's side of the stock brace, measure out 10 degrees below the "x axis," cut that 10 degrees out of the pass. side of the brace, hopefully you have a friend with a welder, take a small piece of at least 1/8" sheet metal cut to the size of the section you cut out. Weld it in place, drill a hole, and mount the tranny using stock mounts.

If you dont have access to a welder, you can get a pice of 1/4"x1.5" flat bar, and using a hammer a vice, and your big burley muscles, wrap the metal around the brace in the area you cut so it is very tight, make it over lap on the bottom, and a hole through the bottom for a bolt and nut (or two) to hold it together. Then drill a hole in the top for the mount and mount your transmission.

If you are confused, just put the mounts on the transmission, slide the bolts that hold the brace towards the back of the car, and mount the brace. Get it tight enough that its pretty much touching the frame, but loose enough that you can move it. Look at the brace from the front of the car, and use a silver sharpie to mark on the brace where the bottom of the mount meets it. If you're using the stock rubber mounts, its okay if the drivers side mount is ever so slightly tweaked.

That is how I did my brace, and its been going along quite well for about 20k miles now.
