I ordered a set from TrendyAuto last night. We'll see how everything works out. Can you install the O2 sensor in the factory-style port or will I need to add a bung down on the collector? I have a VSR center section so I'll probably need to fab short connector pipes. Psyched!

The bungs on the headers will work. Make sure to loctite the nut down on whichever bung you end up not using. It will fall out with vibration.

Loctite is ineffective at high temperatures.

Use a copper or aluminum crush washer and torque the plug properly and it will not fall out.

              Matt is exactly correct.

I did not have the right size crush washers so I made two of them on the lathe. Why two? Because each header has an O2 bung. I didn't use either port prefering to put the O2 sensor in the Y pipe.

Here's a few tips for you:

The headers come with plugs for the O2 ports but the plugs do not have crush washers. I guess you are just supposed to screw them in nice and tight? I don't like that idea, hence the washers.

Throw the supplied gaskets away as they are junk! Order factory exhaust gaskets or reuse the old ones. When I held the supplied gaskets up to the headers and then the head, they were way too big for either! The factory gaskets were exactly the right size. I suspect it is O.K. to reuse the old gaskets as no dealer in my area had any new ones in stock so I had to order them.

Have new exhaust studs and copper nuts on hand as many, if not all, of the old ones will come out when taking the old manifolds off.

I second the fact that the supplied gaskets are crap. Use OEM, and get all new studs and copper nuts. Use a little copper paste on them too. Install the 02 sensor and or plug before you install them. Its just easier that way.

                  Thanks for the support!

Good advice to install the plug or O2 first.

Funny thing, seeing as how these are the real Supersprint headers selling for 1250-1800. Can anyone see the difference?

Is it possible the difference is inside?

When I got my headers, I couldn't help but notice that each individual "tube" is shoved into the header flange that bolts to the head and is welded from the back side.

A few of the tubes were pushed into the flange far enough that they were almost flush but most were a good bit short of the leading edge of the flange.

I was concerned that this "step" would disrupt the exhaust flow. So, I welded up each tube then ground the weld back down and faced the flange so that it was flat again. I spent a lot of time port matching each header tube to the exhaust gasket and the head.

I also noticed that some of the header tubes weren't flush around their perimeters. Wouldn't the little air gap disrupt flow too?

To see what I'm trying to describe, please look closely at the photo below. See how short the tube is? Wouldn't it be better if the tube came to the end of the flange? Do they on the Supersprint headers?

                      Maybe that's the difference?

Here's what my headers looked like as I worked on smoothing the ports out. A little more work to do but you can see the step is gone.

Will it make any difference at the rear wheels? Sure can't hurt and I had fun doing it.

Before this, I hadn't TIG welded stainless steel very much but after this, I was a lot better at it!

That is actually how mine looked. Odd, looks like they missed a step on yours. I wonder if they are mostly like that or finished like mine and now yours.

I dont think that gap would make any notable difference though.

It seems we've found the difference. Every person I've talked to that has these headers has had the same experience. One of the pipes is a little twisted in the flange and the pipes come up short.

I agree with you that it probably makes no difference at the rear wheels.

For $225.00 I'm very pleased with my ebay headers. For $1200.00+ though, I wouldn't be so pleased.

I've always wondered what the real headers looked like. Thanks for posting.

So my headers will be here tomorrow. It appears I might have to do a little welding. I have a fairly nice Hobart mig. I've been rooting around my garage trying to find the manual for it. Do I need to buy different wire to weld stainless?
