Better in most respects, I think, but I'm not an expert.

smaller engine(less power depending on mods to said engine)... however a lighter engine. Also a bad engine for forced induction.
IMHO the s50 is a better engine than an aluminium m52e30sport.net

If you are starting from an M50B25 base and have access to M54 crank, pistons and 135mm conrods, then you could argue that such a 3.0L stroker makes financial sense. Otherwise, if starting a DOHC conversion, you might as well plonk in an S50 right from the get go.
As for S50B30 vs M54B30: 240 bhp vs 231 bhp.
But for a stroked M50B30 using M54 parts plus S50 cams? who knows short of a proper dyno.
Matt - what software do you reckon might work with such a M50B30 stroker?Do yuu think stock S50 software might be adequate to do the job?

as for rods, any S/M50/2 rods will work, other than the M50TU rods which are 140mm.My 2.9L Build!

I think my next project may be a complete OBDII compliant M54B30 e30. :pimp:

Hello
Its my first post here. i'm the owner of this E30 with m54b30 engine.
it works since 1,5 year without any problems. I'm using this car on trackdays and for daily driving.
its all-alloy engine, so its much lighter than m52 or S50/52
engine has 2 vanos and its generate 230HP & 300Nm
There is no necessary to convert to OBD I. its running on MS43 with little mods.
We already made over 12's E30 with this Engine in Poland.
here is a photo story of my car :
