Just curious if people are runnin megasquirt on their m52 and if it was an easy to do setup witht he wiring to the e30 chassis as well as how did you run the knock sensors because I'm thinking about if I'd be able to run w/o them easily.
Megasquirt m52?

their there for the reason of if the car has a knock in the motor from the timing or detonation it changes the map to compensate. With Megasquirt i haven't found any info that you can run the knock sensors with it, so I know it'd be smarter to use one, but how is more what I'm looking for.Comment

Megasquirt Fuel 'n' Spark should have the option to use knock sensors. If it can control ignition timing it should have other inputs such as Intake Air Temperature, Throttle Position, and Coolant Temp sensing. Knock sensing should be another option that can be added to the interface.
At least to my knowledge, MS works just as well as expensive aftermarket stand-alone engine managements. Check out megasquirt.info and find the forums of people who have successfully wires it up to M/S series motors.
You can also try E30tech. Most guys here on R3V are running some type of factory engine management on their swaps.Comment

good ole Jon for you
proper knock sensing isn't easy to do. Knock sensors are basically microphones and sensing involves ECU recognizing a knock pattern from all kinds of noises that engine makes. This pattern is unique for each engine, it will change if you modify engine substantially. Knowing this knock pattern is a luxury BMW can have as it involves inducing detonation to record this pattern, then testing this system, etc.
Knock sensing is disabled past 4krpm because there are just too many noises to make anything useful outta them.
Many people run even turbo systems with no knock sensing with great results. Knock sensing is basically a safety net for times like if the owner uses improper octane gas, or there is too much carbon in chamber that it raises compression and results in detonation.
If you have a good tune and are not brainless with your car, chances are you'd be fine with no knock sensing.
ion sensing and ppp estimation is a much better idea anywayComment
