Not sure what shim you're talking about- there should be nothing between the flywheel and the crank- there is a steel ring that goes on the flywheel UNDER the bolt heads- maybe that's the "shim"?? If it's hitting the block or pan, something is definitely NOT right. Are you sure you don't have it on backwards???
Also, to flog the issue of the dowel collar thing a little more. I agree with Matt and others- it probably *should* be in there, but it's NOT (IMHO) a critical piece for anything other than proper crank/flywheel alignment- the collar goes in the 1 hole in the flywheel that's larger than the others. On most BMW's this ensures that the timing marks OR the sensor pin on eta's is in the proper alignment- not sure about the M/S/50/52's......
