Not sure what shim you're talking about- there should be nothing between the flywheel and the crank- there is a steel ring that goes on the flywheel UNDER the bolt heads- maybe that's the "shim"?? If it's hitting the block or pan, something is definitely NOT right. Are you sure you don't have it on backwards???

Also, to flog the issue of the dowel collar thing a little more. I agree with Matt and others- it probably *should* be in there, but it's NOT (IMHO) a critical piece for anything other than proper crank/flywheel alignment- the collar goes in the 1 hole in the flywheel that's larger than the others. On most BMW's this ensures that the timing marks OR the sensor pin on eta's is in the proper alignment- not sure about the M/S/50/52's......

Ya im not sure if "Shim" Is the right word but it goes inbetween the fly and the crank it came off of the Automaic and if i dont use it the fly comes in contact with the back bottom edge of the oil pan and i dont have in on backwards.

uhhh, so this is an m20 single mass yer tryn to put on rite? if so, u need to shave some material off either the flywheel backside, or the oil pan...

You need to search. This has got to be in the top 3 most common issues.

i have a question to add onto this thread.

when using the m20 flywheel on an s50, do i use the s50 flywheel bolts, or the m20 flywheel bolts, or are they the same? i would compare them, except i only have the s50 bolts...

He makes a good point not sure witch ones i should use. The M50 ones seem to be a little short and the bolts from my M20 i think are goign to be way to long as it was an E witha dual mass FW but i didnt know thats what you were suposed to gring down had i known that it would have made things a lot easier thanks guy hopefully i can get this stuff rollen.

                I used M20 flywheel bolts.
