You all are resourceful..how to move an engine?

If I go ahead and get this s 50 delivered to my home...assuming the truck has a lift gate ...how would I get the engine into my garage?......

If they just drop it in my drive way.......then what. I have no access to anything like a fork lift......etc

Right now this is my biggest concern......I havent picked a shop yet, so Im thinking of just getting it shipped to the house.

    Waddya say?......tia!!!

I've dealt with this before, I had an engine delivered to my old apartment once. The freight service should call and tell you when they'll be there. You'll also have to request that they bring a pallet jack to move it wherever you need it moved too. (that will cost extra)

or get some buddies to help you lift it.

If it's thrown on a pallet, then you'd probably want a pallet jack, but you could just use the engine crane slowly.

Most people I know don't have forklifts or pallet jacks at their homes.

Best bet would be to be there with an engine crane when the driver comes by. Don't expect them to have anything, if it's a commerical shipping company (I used Con-way) they figure somehow have that at your house -.-

Go to Harbor Freight, buy an Engine Hoist and an engine stand. You can then get the engine out of the truck and place it on the stand. Then use the hoist to remove the old and install the new one.

If, on the other hand, you are having a shop install the engine, just get the hoist so you can 1)remove it from the truck delivering it, and 2) place it in the cehicle you will use to take the engine to the shop.

Used Hoists sell quite quickly on craigslist, so you may end up recouping most of the purchase price on it.

Pick up some 2x4's, 1/2 inch plywood, 4 heavy duty casters. Make a rolling table to put it on. We made a couple of these when my brother started tearing down his truck for a restoration. Relatively cheap and will hold up for a while.

It shouldnt be too hard with you an a friend. I pratically moved an s54 on my own, but killed my back in the process.

Haha, these engines ARE pretty heavy!

I had my S50 on a stand, and figured, hey, might as well flip it over so I can work on the oil pump pickup and pan bolts from up top, right?

Well, the thing threatened to tip the friggin' stand over. Meanwhile a hot stream of poop threatened to run down my leg as I struggled to tip the thing back upright. Fun times!

Moral of the story--get a stand with a WIDE base, or work on the oilpan from the bottom.

For me it was on a stand, really wid base. I had to get it off and move about 5 feet, but I moved it none the less.
