I'll be back in Seattle this summer where I have great facilities to do a swap, but right now I'm stuck in a rental house in DC.
I'd like to do my swap here but I'm not sure exactly what I will need for tools and I am using the car as a daily driver.
If I had a cherry picker and a week off would that be reasonable to get it done, assuming I had all the parts? Anybody in the DC area want to help for free pizza and beer?

Yes, a week off would be reasonable to get it done, assuming you had all the parts. I did one on a three day weekend. I didn't actually get the rest of the car rolling till later, because I had to fix up some chassis/brake parts.
From an empty engine bay to a test fire, it took around 2 days. The third day was just clean up activities, like neatening up the wiring harness, fully bleeding the cooling system, etc.

Bennetts22 and I did it in about 6 hours. Two qualified wrenchers, a lift, and all pieces previously test fitted / used and then removed and sitting on the garage floor.
We installed the motor, exhaust, cooling system, the whole deal. Drove the car the same day. It was pretty cool, I just figured we'd get a good start...we finished before dinner!Comment

Damn I'm jealous. I wish I could pull that off. Stupid mismatched parts...Bennetts22 and I did it in about 6 hours. Two qualified wrenchers, a lift, and all pieces previously test fitted / used and then removed and sitting on the garage floor.

a week should be good with a little more than basic tools-torque wrench, torx sockets, wrenches and socket(8mm-19mm) etc.I'll be back in Seattle this summer where I have great facilities to do a swap, but right now I'm stuck in a rental house in DC.

i took me about 3 days to swap in my s52 into my e30m3 but, that's from scratch-meaning converting to obd1 specs, installing e34 oil pan, drilling in the extra temp sensor,cut/thread the 944 booster, prepping the 3.25 lsd diff etc.
i made the harness weeks before-when i had all my necessary parts prepped and ready-it was install time,it took me 3 days(2 days prepping,1 day assembly) to swap in everything from engine to diff and the exhaust...btw i did it by myself:-)Last edited by vr4boy; 11-27-2007, 05:24 PM.Comment

Yeah, it's killing me. At my folks place in Seattle I have a lift, HP air and all the stuff that makes it easy. Here in DC I have a 2 car garage a collection of good tools, a deadline and 2 kids to "help".
I already have the harness converter wired and plan to use the stock tranny which should make it easier. I also plan to use the stock exhaust (for now).
I'll be looking for some qualified help and a loaner car when I commit to it.Comment
