    e34m50 oilpan design resistance to oil starvation

    I'd like to hear some opinions on whether or not e34m50 pan is better or not in terms of preventing oil-starvation condition while high G's are acting on the car (skidpad, autox, road-course with slicks, etc)
    This seems to be a problem felt by racers of m50 and us s5x cars.

    i have not analyzed both in my hands, but imo the e34 one should contain oil volume much better because of the two 'bulges' on the e36m3 on and onlu one on e34 pan

    also, how would one go about bafflng our pans?

    I believe Treehouse Racing ran their e30 swaped car with no baffle. Rob (SkaFrog) would know.

      i dont understand. i thought the e34 pan was the ONLY pan you could use if fitting to a e30. im not aware of any alternatives. i dont believe you can fit a s50 pan.

          your assumption was correct. i was talking about people/racing teams experience problems with the engine inside e36, i.e. with the original pan.

            the s50 has a baffle that bolts directly onto the block, hense it having no baffle in the oil pan. however, for us 24v guys, that stock s50 baffle has to come off, to accomidate the e34 oil pan.

              guess i was unclear again, i meant the aftermarket (or diy) baffle kit people weld in. Kinda like this one:


              apparently an e36 m3 ltw had a baffled oilpan for this reason

                oh i thought u were basing your question offa the ETK drawing, so i was just pointing out that the baffle wasnt shown for s50 pan...oops. i have no imput for your actual question, sorry!

                  I have the bimmerworld oil pan baffle welded into my S50 oil pan and it helps a little bit. I was still getting lifter tick with the baffle and 7.5 quarts of 5w40 full synthetic oil. My lifters could use a replacing tho. But as far as oil starvation, I don't think that pan will eliminate oil starvation completely. I would just tack weld the oil pump nut on (or install the nut & wire combination), run 1/2 quart extra oil, run oil that works well at high temps, and install an aftermarket baffle.

                    Perhaps dry-sumping may solve your oil starvation issues -lol

                    One thing I noticed on the E34 sump is a horizontal baffle in the catch area, but I think this just seems to shroud the dipstick and that wierd removable plate (was there a level sensor there on some models?)
                    But the design of it is pretty good, fairly centralised and low, one would expect it to be decent for lateral loading...
