    Head stud question

Hey guys, just wondering if it was possible to put a head on with studs installed in the block all while bolted in an e30. Kinda thinking about upgrading to mls and studs but i dont want to take the engine out or lift it up at all.

    thanks!

I would think it would be a PITA. You'd have to modify the battery tray, I think.

The other question... why do you think an MLS and studs will be an "upgrade?"

you can install the studs after you have put the head and gasket back on, then tighten the nuts up.

        15 - 20 pounds of boost + MLS = upgrade.

True, thanks for the idea borat

So no one has a 24v e30 with studs and tried putting the head on the motor in the car?

I have a 24v e30 with studs, but I built my motor on a stand.

I seriously think you will NOT be able to put the head on over the studs with the block in the car. I think you MAY be able to thread in the studs through the head, but I wouldn't count on it... it's a pretty delicate process setting the studs in the block just so, so they still wobble and don't bind and break as you torque them.

Yeah. thats kinda why i was wondering but i can see where your coming from with the assumption of not being able to but i was hoping someone would know for sure.
Oh well. I guess with exhaust manifold and the intake manifold off it wouldnt be too bad of a job to lift the motor up to vertical. Well see, i have to get the car running on boost first :)

For future reference... I just found out you can put the head on with the block all bolted in the car and studs installed.

and i quote "yeah the head went back on with the engine in, and head studs installed. i think this is my new preferred way of assembly. it makes the engine / trans assembly really easy to drop in. i've had the head off a number of times (unfortunately) and there is plenty of clearance to get things together even with studs." You can also put the studs in after the head is on. I actually helped do it today.

right on. so we have options.

Looking at multiplex's build, he has the corner of the battery tray cut out for his downpipe. Maybe that helped too.
