    Clutch setup. e30m50

Ok guys i just need some suggestions from you guys.

    I will be using

    e30 fly
    e30 to bearing
    e30 pp
    and a 260 trans.

Im looking @ clutchnet.com clutches. The car will be mostly a track/drift car with the occasional street driving. Im looking @ their solid hub 6 puck clutch 228 size. Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions? Do you guys think this clutch is too much for a m50tu with bolt ons. Please post up your suggestions. Thanks.

I wholeheartedly recommend Southbend clutches. Easiest to drive with great torque holding.

PM JordanMD88 on bfc and tell him Matt from TRM sent you. Seriously, they are some of the best stuff out there, and we've used it ALL.

With the abuse drifting does to clutches, I'd go ahead and upgrade to a 240mm E36 M3 setup. It fits in the 260 bellhousing, but depending on the clutch/PP you use, you may need to do some light grinding. With a stock M20 you won't need a lot of clamping power, but you should get a 3-strap race pressure plate to handle the driveline shocks that clutch kicks present.

If you decide to go to a 240mm, PM me.

I would not mind using a 240. Stu. As long as i can use it with a m20 flywheel im game. You got pm.

Ive had no slipping with m20 clutch with a mild m50. The e36 s50 clutch is tits though if you have the desire to muscle it around. I have an s50 clutch, flywheel, pp, and t.o. if you are interested. I will sell it cheap.

hmmm. See that makes me think. Is it worth me spending the extra cash on the hd pp and to bearing? I used to clutch kick the crap out of my stock sachs setup.

Is 6 puck unsprung clutch with a normal sachs pp really that bad?

the sachs HD pp is pretty beefy, if you don't want to do it again for a while just get that. then, if you want to turbo in the future you won't have to change anything as a sachs HD pp with the stock E30 clutch holds 333ft/lbs...

The point of an aftermarket clutch is not just torque holding. Like Stu said, aftermarket pressure plates have stronger drive straps, stronger springs, and thus more clamping force. They are usually made out of a more heat-resistant friction material also.

On the other hand, I doubt a clutch kick puts even stock drive straps in danger of breaking, as it would only load them in tension. Drive straps generally break because of poor downshifting technique that compresses, bends, then fatigues them.

okay.. what is your point exactly? that an HD pp is a bad idea given it has built in upgrade capacity?

An organic clutch of any type or size won't last as long or perform as well as a clutch made out of a higher performance friction material under harsh use.

that wasn't my point.. I was merely pointing out that the HD pp is a good upgrade all by itself (333ft-lbs comes from sachs), and coupled with the 6 puck he's looking at he wouldn't have to worry about his clutch for a long, long time.

Matt, does he represent Southbend clutches or something? I am looking to purchase one this week. I emailed them but I haven't heard back yet.
