    Bench test motor?

    What are your thoughts...

    My friends are trying to persuade me to bench test the motor before I drop into the engine bay.

    How would I go about bench testing it?

      complete rebuild...unless my idea of bench testing is completely wrong.

      to my understanding bench testing the motor means that i hook up fuel and circulate some coolant in there and run it on some kind of stand to make sure everything is running as it should.

            just put it in the car and break it in normally - unless you have a bench test already setup specifically for your motor, and it's easily accessable, it's going to be more of a headache than anything.

            I've seen the universal style setups too, and I wouldn't want to put my motor anywhere near that, especially if I've just put a lot of time/energy/money into a rebuild. They basically hook it up with very crude EMS, run the motor (like shit) for a few minutes to see if it works, and then change the oil. Not exactly how I like my motor's first few minutes to be..

            if you want to go the extra mile, put it in and go straight to a dyno and break it in there. bench testing is for factories that build hundreds of motors a day, not a guy in his garage with one really expensive engine.

              haha you know, this is exactly what i have been telling my friends. i feel more comfortable putting in there. besides, if i put the damn thing in there, i can take it back out and put it back!

              i will probably to road tuning with a friend, i don't know of any dyno's in my immediate area.

                yeah, there's no reason to bench test it. Race teams do that on motors they spend like $50g's to build because they do lots of them, guys who built a motor in their garage like you and me just put it in and run it in the car.

                  Unless you have access to an engine dyno for break-in and performance testing. there's little that you can do in the way of bench testing. Drop the engine into the car and see how it runs.
